Players you thought would be good but turned out not to be so good

John McLaughlin. The Catt had an eye for a bargain and many people thought he'd discovered another gem when he bought 'Tiger' from Falkirk. His early performances brought comparisons with the great Ramon Wilson, though that might have been just his prematurely balding pate. Think he hung around for a while but only made around 60 appearances before heading off to the USA and back to Falkirk. He was far from the worst we'd had but his signing was one of the first indications that Catterick was losing his magic touch in the transfer market.

Two more Catterick signings: David Lawson and Mick Bernard. Lawson was signed for a record fee for a goalkeeper - God only knows what the Catt saw in him. Him and Dai the Drop cost us a couple of trophies in the 70s.

Bernard was ok, a chunky, tough tackling midfielder who always gave his all. Unfortunately, he was signed the summer after The Biggest Mistake in Everton History the previous December (Happy Christmas Evertonians) and so always suffered in comparison to the man he replaced - Alan Ball. Kendall, Bernard and Harvey is not remembered as fondly as Kendall, Ball and Harvey, despite Howard's continuing magnificence. Quickly shunted to right-back by Catterick's successor, Billy Bingham, he did better there where he was only compared to the likes of Terry Darracott.

im sure I have missed a load of others
You thought some of those were going to be good for us? Can't believe that.

Mo Besic still.

I'm still convinced he has got ridiculous talent but is massively flawed by being an incredibly stupid footballer.

Richard Wright.
He provided some laughs at least!! Falling out of his loft at home looking for a suitcase, tripping over a sign on the pitch ( keep off the grass), before the game started and getting replaced, Not to mention his antics once he started playing. He made plenty of money at Man. City, there about three years as a stand in ‘keeper and I don’t think he got a game.

I honestly thought Ashley Williams would be better than how it turned out. I thought he could be the leader, solid defender we needed at the back. Always liked him at Swansea & he had a good tournament in the Euro’s for Wales, just before he signed for us. How wrong I was! Very disappointing signing

Going back further, I would also give a mention to Mo Johnston. Goal machine in Scotland, expected more when we signed him.
Howard never did his homework on Mo, another playboy. There is a story that Mo was in hospital, drying out after another bout of drinking and Howard went to see him. A specialist came to talk toMo while Howard was there. The doctor asked me if he could see any polar bears in the room, Mo said no, he then asked if he could see any crocodiles or aligaters, Mo said no, he then asked him if he could see any cockroaches or spiders, Mo said no. Howard said ‘ I didn’t half feel sorry for him, the room was full of them !!

Got a PL winners medal too.

I remember the 1994 World Cup and and one of the stand out players was Daniel Amokachi. He scored one of the goals of the tournament against Greece in which he took it past a couple of players and scored a thunderbolt in the top corner. When we signed him for £3m, I was chuffed. But he was a failure. Had he not scored them two goals against Spurs in the Semi Final of the FA Cup, I think he would have gone down as one of our worst ever signings.
