Our captain out for six months with damaged ligaments. FFS, it just keeps on getting worse. Ah well, a few on here probably consider it a blessing in disguise.:@(n)

I'm quite sure his doubters will start to respect him from now on. You don't know what your missing, until it's gone. Hope you have a healthy and quick recovery, Pip.(y)

Im pretty sure it was him who led us to do so well last season when injuries started to creep in.

Now he's gone, someone needs to lead and pull us out of the [Poor language removed], lead by example, give the new guys an outlet to talk to.

We're going to struggle big time IMO.

I don't disagree with you at all, but as Heitinga is anyway unavailable for Europe (at least for a while) I suspect we are going to see some form of the Cahill/Fellaini central midfield swapping from last season.

Oops!

Speaking of Heitinga - a not altogether complimentary account of him here: " as pants off the pitch as he was off it - a meat-headed, penalty-committing liability". " Atlético Madrid turn drama into crisis as Gil jnr keeps on digging | Football | guardian.co.uk

How do we get a player badly injured and not even get a yellow card shown the **** who did it? It was the same at Newcastle last season. Moyes has said he wasn't happy on both occasions. Well he and the players on the pitch should be all over the ref like flies around [Poor language removed] demanding something gets done when it happens. Can you imagine any other team puitting up with that?

Unbelievable.

Couldn't agree more.

I'm usually actually proud of how we conduct ourselves on the pitch, none of this whining and moaning at every little decision like some teams.

But there comes a time when the players (and Moyes) need to stick up for themselves and shout about soemthing.

Reckon Ferguson would of come out today and said Etuhu wasn't that type of player? Would he bollocks.

Bad news, i think we will miss his leadership more then anthing - have never liked him as a holding midfeilder if im honest, but does a stirling job for a full back a position, i think hes very underatted in.

As for the challenge, to be fair i didnt think there was intent or mailice in it and both players went in for it 100% Phil came out the worse easily could have went either way.

So what happens now? Moyes will have to go back to the drawing board in terms of a system, Neville was key really in the 4-5-1. I would be half tempted to go 4-4-2 strange as that concept seems!

Moving Pienaar centrally is an option, but am i the only one that thinks Rodwell does his best work more advanced then deep - i wouldnt mind unshakleing him a bit and see what he can do in terms of creativity in less of a defensive role he has vision and techniuque to pull it off and he has a goal in him certainly. Pienaar is also an option - but i dont think that would do Baines game any favours.

Alternatively i would go the 4-5-1 route with Heitinga coming in and at least giving him a try there.

Fellaini was a must for me even before Phil got injured.

Footy manager head on but everyones going 4-3-3 nowdays -

Howard
Hibbert Yobo Distin Baines
Pienaar Heitinga Billy
Fellaini Jo Cahill

Jo could sit in deep allowing Fellaini or Cahill forward, or push forward letting Cahill and Fellaini to join Heitinga. Pienaar and Billy just push up and down. Just a thought.

Rodwell is decent in advanced positions, like you say he could definitely score a few from 20 yards. He's not really someone who's going to unlock defences tho, I can't recall him making many chances for people.

Anyone else see Fellaini doing it twice yesterday.

Ive seen Rodders do it for the U21's - its an option but its probably unfair on the lad to expect from him at this stage in his development.

Yep Fellaini is good at that, I've always said he's got vision. I think he may well start playing regularly again now, just a shame that we'll have to mix and match to squeeze him in again.

Thats a lot of congestion on the flanks for me mate, a 4-3-3 (though i prob wouldnt go with it) for me would have to see Billy, Yak and Pienaar (though hes not great in scoring positions).

------------------Howard

Hibbert-------Yobo----Distin-----Baines

----------------------Heitinga

-------------Rodwell-----------Fellaini

Billy---------------Yak----------------Pienaar.

Honestly i think Moyes may have to go 4-4-2, makes sense with 4 fit forwards (touches wood). One more injury lads and we're looking dicey Special attention to midfeild and anywhere at the back.

Those kinds of formations are all about ball rentention.

It could work having Heiting or Rodwell in there being helped by Fellaini and Cahill, playing less forward, and allowing Billy and Pienaar to push forward more depending on the game.

I was thinking that.

It would depend on Billy's and Heitinga's ball retention and passing. We couldn't afford to lose the ball needlessly.

We'd lose a lot of width as well (whatever there was from the midfield). So would doubly rely on Baines and Hibbert to provide that.

I really would love to try it, but I doubt Moyes will:(
