I haven't read all the comments on this long thread but is Jags out of contract this summer?

This feller kissing arse today concerning Silva's appointment. Every single manager that comes in he ingratiates himself with.

Unreal, he's 36 when the season starts and should be nowhere near a place in the squad never mind the first team. The likes of him and Baines will need blasting off with a blow torch.

Silva has to be strong here and put them on the transfer list. If he doesn't they'll bury him with the first sign of a downturn as they have others.

Mad to think that the likes of Carragher, Ferdinand, G.Neville were well better than him and retired younger than him. The likes of John Terry, again miles better, dropped down the divisions. We’ve still got Captain Fantastic stealing a living here.

Get a backbone, Everton, and can him.
It's depressing to think that no mark bottler will be heading into another era at the club - and probably as "captain".

Can no one at that club see what a massive weight he is around the necks of any team wanting to play with style and fierce competitiveness?

Devestated that he'll, once again, be donning the captain's armband for another season of stinking the gaff out at the heart of our defence. Yes he was once a decent but not spectacular centre half and yes, he can come in and do a job against poor sides, but to retain him as captain when his best years are about 4 years behind him, would be nothing short of disgraceful. Particularly when there is the perfect player - captain of his country no less! - in the squad, in his prime years, ready to take over the mantle.

but come on he’s 36, there’s no shame in saying we should look to do better.

obviously, but there's also nothing dignified in whinging about him like some on here, similar to spoiled infants grown bored with their toys, when he has clearly been a worthy and committed asset to the club for the past decade

Jags was a top player 8 years ago, even 4 years ago, but come on he’s 36, there’s no shame in saying we should look to do better.

And he's still our best defender

Says a lot

I'd keep him. Have him as club captain for another six months to a year, just as an insurance policy.

Keane will be given a chance I think, but we're obviously desperate for another, quality CB.

Punt Williams and Mori, who are tosh, and keep Jags as 4th choice. Keane, Holgate and the new CB fighting for places in the line up.

Baines stays for a similar reason, as long as he's happy to be a rotation option with a new, first-choice left-back.

He's our best defender - by far.

I don't think he's a great captain, far from it, but he's the only organiser in that back line. You could see what a difference it made to Keane having him there.

People who hate Jags aren't doing it based on his performances, because anyone with eyes can see he is still remarkably consistent. They're doing it because they're set in their ways, as with everything else.

I'm all for giving Seamus the armband, he's a real leader. But for now there's nothing wrong with having Jags stay in and around the squad until we have guaranteed improvements in that area.

He was easily, and I mean easily our best defender last year. He needs replacing, undoubtedly, but I dread to think what might have happened if we'd just 'canned him' this time last season.
