It’s sad we have allow ourselves to offer him a contract way beyond his capabilities.

Last season should be his last and this season should be retiring to backroom staff as a form of loyalty pension. 38years old centerback in the premiere league is just pushing way too much.
What done is done, I still hope we can win a cup and allow him to retire with a medal for his loyal service.
He's 36. /pedant

Red card was a bit harsh tbh. But then some of you wish Jags was more aggressive, so him getting sent off is good, I guess? I wonder who'll be captain while he's out. It had better be Coleman. The old boy played well enough until that tackle though.

Is the absolute double truth right there.

We draw with 10 men in a game we were still the best team, and the knives are out for the likes of Baines and Jags who have been great servants to this club.

We should be better than that.

Yes great servants but they are finished as starters for the team. If they continue to produce poor displays like they have done for last 2 years they will lose respect for what they have done for the club. It is not the minority that think this. There is a reason that people are lising faith in them. They are making too many mistakes week in and week out for 2 seasons now if not more. They cannot be defended anymore just because they were decent 4 years ago. No personal abuse needed but football wise they just dont cut it anymore

Yet we’re free to have a go at the other players that haven’t been here ages like Schneiderlin and Keane. Nah. Jags has been protected and got away with murder for far too long.

We've just signed a LB and CB from Barca and another CB from Chelsea.

Yes we all know their best days are behind them and they will be cover for the rest of ths season but have some respect, they were picked today and that is that, one mistake by Jags and Baines had a decent game.

No need to jump all over them is there, lets just look foward to the season and the promise it has.

At times jags has been an absolute rock at the back. I think he is poor now and even today before his harsh sending off I thought he headed it a couple of times and it looked awful but show him the respect he deserves please . He is a legend in my eyes for ever anyway because he scored that last minute stunner against them lot.

I think some of the comments are a bit OTT but I think the general point is that we can’t be that sentimental as a club if we want to progress.

They have been great servants but are increasingly liabilities. Baines is good enough to keep around for backup for another season at least but Jags is not.

He started today because Holgate wasn’t 100% but he looked fine when he came on and we have two new signings ready to go in the coming weeks. Barring maybe the league cup, I don’t think we’ll see him starting or perhaps even playing for Everton again and that should be fine by anyone who wants to see the club succeed, IMO.

First game of the season lad, with replacements yet to be introduced and bedded in, OTT would be right.
