Persistent standing at aways is now costing us tickets

Being a "foreign" fan and watching the games on tv/pc I've noticed that the Goodison announcer has been more vocal recently in asking the away fans specifically to sit down whereas in the past it was always a general message to the crowd.

I'd also say that we should reduce Sunderland's allocation for the next time they're at Goodison but that wouldn't change the amount of empty seats in the away end one bit. The bad teds.

And judging by the fact that Sunderland have withdrawn individual season tickets from their own fans, they're capable of working out which individuals are breaking that agreement. Instead of taking a note at the time and passing it on to our end, they've decided to punish everyone. If the offenders are regulars at aways, they'll have no trouble getting tickets - it'll be fans who rely on later rounds of sale who suffer.

If the idea was to turn us against persistent standers and police it socially, it would probably work, but for the fact that it appears to only be Sunderland doing it, not the entire league. As it is, it's their club that comes out looking daft, not our fans.

The fewer tickets they sell, the less money they make. So, give them credit for their principle.

Rules are rules, and people who continuously stand are selfish.

I'm one of those who'd like to see standing reintroduced in some form, btw.

When Sunderland moved away fans to the upper tier they were aware that persistant standing exists with away fans in general so I expect this was their rule for all away clubs.

If there is expected standing in upper tiers then it's standard practice to not sell the front rows for our safety. They are ensuring that if persistant standing happens then it will be safe to do so. So this is a good move by Sunderland.

Now Sunderland do not sell out. So there is no reason whatsoever why they couldn't give away clubs a larder away area anyway to begin with. So a perceived reduced allocation due to persistant standing is untrue plus it's Everton's first time in that new away area, so it is actually only different sized away area.

They are only wording that it is reduced to satisfy their Saftey Advisory Group, who in turn are only ensuring your safety by not selling aisle seats or front row seats.

Yes mate i was there. I have no problem with any of the above, i was simply making a lighthearted joke about the 'dancing, fist pumping' comment.

I haven't got a problem with fans singing, i do it. What i have a problem with is people standing and as a result less Blues getting to watch away games, it's bad enough when old people and kids have to suffer for 90 minutes. Until there are safe standing sections people should sit down.[/QUOTE]

Agreed

You need to think about your fellow fans. You may disgagree with the current set of rules (perhaps rightly so) but you should still operate within them for the benefit of the people who will suffer from you standing. I know the atmos is better when everyone stands but we're not there yet, and constant flaunting of the rules is only going to make safe standing less of a possability. You have to win within the current system before you can change it. That's politics. Not saying it's right, but it's the way it is

By removing the sale of front row and aisle seats Sunderland have made sure that if any standing occurs then it will be safe.

It is just a customer service issue, ie unfair to stand in front of kids as there's no choice in where your seat is at aways.

Seems a bit hypocritical to moan seeing as all you can hear at Goodison is the tannoy telling away fans to sit down.

Incorrect. At the Oldham replay Gwaldys St was told to sit down. Quite rightly the reaction was everyone stood up.

If we want safety at football grounds then seats should actually be removed and capacities then reduced, since seats are a death trap shoud there ever be a fire. They are also responsible for injuries when people topple over them in celebration or whatever.

Standing areas is the logical best solution. Then you can pay your money and take your choice. The moaners who want to sit down with their blankets and flasks of tea can then choose to do so, with their views unimpeded. Those of us for whom football is an experience rather than a piece of theatre can then stand up without being subject to 'sit down' shouts, arguments etc. Of course we had such choice in the past. Time to turn back the clock I think. And of course it can be done without compromising safety. No one wants to go back to anything like the days of crushed terracing, swaying etc.

There is a very good reason seating was introduced, remember. Fans don't stand still they jump, push forward etc it's safer for families and children with seating. I am all for a standing zone but the majority of the grounds should remain seated it's dangerous. Stadiums have fire saftey measures these days and no smoking.

But there's always been seating for those who wanted to feel more 'safe' and have more comfort and a better view. As I say, we already had the solution - a mix of seating and terracing. The problem of safety had nothing to do with seating, and everything to do with overcrowding on the terraces.

it's everything to do with safety, that's not even up for debate. Standing meant fans at the front got crushed everytime the team went on the attack whether the stadium was overcrowded or not.

don't most away fans stand from all clubs stand? the aways I've been to I always thought we sat down more than most clubs

This is where safe standing comes in, though. I don't think anyone is advocating a return to how things were.

Wigan fan got a letter banning him from the DW for the rest of this season for being ejected from Goodison for persistent standing:
