Pat Nevin Signing

Wasn't it Summer 88 when he signed?

The club did make a big push to support Harvey - Cottee, McCall, Neil McDonald, and Nevin all signed.

I was still in school but felt very optimistic that summer that we'd go on to regain the title.

The mind and memory play tricks. The team following the title winning team with good wingers and Cottee and Sharp should have gone onto good things, it just didn't work out. Think there were some good enough if not great players, they just didn't gell at all.

I have this thought that we always played 442 right through the whole period, but not sure we did now even under Howard in the 80's

Thanks.
Reading various autobiographies one of the reasons for not having success was the loss of the team spirit HK had developed and had been key to the league championship wins. The newcomers didn't take to the approach.

I think Colin Harvey bought him, then when Kendall came back he rarely used Pat, a good player for me, remember seeing in the reserves v Notts Forest on a cold freezing day doing his best and putting a good shift in,don’t think he got a fair deal from Howard to be hones, don’t know if Nevin was still there when Howard packed in half through one season, left us high and dry, and yet we still took him back for a third disastrous season, when he nearly got us relegate, to be honest he was ravaged by that illness at the time.
dont get me started on Howard Kendall. what did he ever do for us, except steal a living for ten years
Okay there were the two championships.
and yes, we did get to three FA cups finals.
And that European one. But other than that? Bugger all.

He gave us four great years and gave us our pride back, he then left, most probably because we couldn’t compete in Europe, Bilbao was a sound team in Spain but in the shadow of Real and Barcalona, he then went to Man. City, left because that was an affair and Everton was a marriage, according to Howard, a marriage he walked away from, packed in Everton half way through a season, had a spell at Notts County, sacked I think, he had a spell with Sheffield Unt, got them to a play off final, not sure how it ended there, had a spell in Greece, didn’t last long, came back to Everton, as I said for a disastrous season, think he managed Birmingham City, so I’ll always be grateful for the four brilliant years he gave us in his first spell at Everton as a manage, better still I could talk all day about his time here as a brilliant player, absolutely brilliant player, in his own right not as part of the holy trinity. Howard should never have come back here as manager after the first spell, and the third spell he shouldn’t have been brought back for the simple reason he just wasn’t capable, because of his illness, which should have obvious to the people who hired him, it was to plenty of people in the city.

what a bloodless account of our greatest ever manager. He left second time on an entirely reasonable point of principle (with the chairman refusing to sanction a move for Dublin who would have been a terrific signing). You make it sound like his third spell we saw him asleep in the gutter and out of the goodness of our hearts gave him a home, and paid the price. not really. In fact, he had taken over a very poor Sheffield United and had them absolutely flying. So he was still a very good manager at that point. Then he came to Everton just after we'd won another league, sorry, just after we'd avoided relegation. And how much was he given to help stave off another relegation dog fight? Nothing. In fact, he actually at season end had made a £5m profit out of transfers in and out. Lots of people since say 'oh yes, it was clear he couldnt' do it' well it wasn't clear to me at the time. We played some really good footy that year. And then came the fall out with Speed. He was treated miserably by the club for a second time. And did Howard ever criticise anyone at Everton? No, a gentleman, and the greatest manager we've had by a country mile.

Bloodless? Can’t agree with that, you’ll have to explain to me how and where he made £5M profit at the end of his last season and were we played lots of good football that season, he was sleeping on a camp bed at Bellefield training ground some nights in that last season, I think the least said about his fall out with Gary Speed the better and has for his “ he was treated miserably by the club for the second time” he got finished and got paid for the remaining year on his contract, or was it two years, after a very, very poor years work.

he sold Hinchcliffe and Speed for hefty fees, and wasn't allowed to bring anyone in other than for buttons. I can't get my hands on the specifics after all this time but remember clearly we had a surplus of around £4.5 m. he got used to staying in the training ground when he was in Spain, big deal. His fall out with Speed, yes let's not go there, but Gary insisted on a move last day of the window when we were facing relegation. Not great. So Howard had a lot to deal with, a crap team, no money, desertion by the captain, and he still steered the ship home under the watch of an extremely unsupportive chairman. I remember the football from the year before, Howard's was a distinct improvement on that, as would be expected. He was after all a brilliant coach. Thumping Liverpool among others. And his thanks for all of that was not another go, but instant dismissal. Triffic.

Always loved Pat. Tells it how it is, left wing in politics although a right winger. Very skillful, but obviously suffered from trying to replace the irreplaceable Tricky Trev.

Top fella aswell. Mate of mine(celtic fan) was playing a gig in his band. Very small venue but pat turned up as he liked supporting local bands. Said he couldnt have met a nicer bloke. Nothing granduer about him.

I was at that game. Didn’t we destroy them in the first half 3-0 but they came back in the second half and we ended up with a squeaky bottom 3-2 win.
Just looked this up. Only 1-0 at half time but it was a squeaky bottom.

EVERTON3
Mike Newell 34', Pat Nevin 47', Greame Sharp 53'
MANCHESTER UNITED2
Brian McClair 57', Russel Beardsmore 66'

He was ok for a small fella in an era were players kicked lumps out of eachother he was usually blowing out of his arse after 60 minutes
I think the best signing Everton made around that time was Mike Newell such an underrated footballer

That didn't happen because the January transfer window didn't even exist in 1998. The first ever January transfer window was in 2003.

And I can't agree with your earlier comment about us playing good football in Howard's third stint. That 97/98 team was by far the worst Everton side I've seen by some distance. So bad it survived relegation only on goal difference.

He once pulled a friend of mine in a night club in Preston, when he was on the booze with George Best. Him and Besty were in this club all the time. Could have been Squires, or the Warehouse, but I'm not sure.
