I mean I assume P&O know employment law better than me, but I always thought that a redundancy happens when an actual job disappears. (Re location/change of business/etc etc) Not to just get a cheaper workforce in to do the same job.

This is legal, a firm my dad used to work for used to do it quite regularly. They just cite ongoing needs of the business as the reason for making people redundant and provided they follow whatever terms apply in the existing contracts (and aren’t sacking people for race / sex / politics etc) there’s no legal problem.

Well P&O said just that.

That changed a while back, basically by changing terms and conditions they are creating a new 'different' position. It's the essence of fire and rehire, getting rid of benefits long since paid for by workers in the past.
Thatcher and her union bashing eh? Whodathunkit...

The ferry arm are detached from the cruise business. DP who own the ferry side of the business have been attempting to staff the vessels for years with crews from the likes of the Philippines. I've lost count of the times they've tried it on the North Sea operation. They stopped the Hull to Zeebrugge crossings blaming it on Brexit/Covid.
You watch, that route will magically be reinstated once they achieve their aims of ridding their vessels of UK personnel.

Reading about a private security firm in South East hiring "handcuff" trained officers ready to engage in restraint techniques hiring to assist in removal of staff from marine establishment.
£810 contract @ £14.50 per hour if anyone's interested.
