Ozil quits Germany

I'm responding to Billy's question asking what the issue in Germany is. I've responded to such a hot question as fairly as possible, using my own experience plus evidence from respectable publications, such as FOCUS which show the results of a mainstream poll saying 70% of Germans have concern.

Shall we pretend this concern isn't there?

That Billy liked your post tells me both of you would prefer to not hear about such things. That's fine if yous don't wanna know, but then don't ask questions like what is the issue with Islam in Germany and then claim it's a genuine question. A genuine question would be genuinely interested in an answer.

To understand the Özil situation one needs to understand that such things like that poll exist. But as it's a football thread I'll just repeat the important bit from my original post:

and we'll leave it there, I reckon.
I liked the post because I agree with the sentiment that concerns about Islam are widely overblown and just because 70% of Germans are concerned it doesn’t mean they’re right or well informed. It’s the same in the UK in my opinion. And I think persecuting a religion is dangerous. We all know what happened 70 years ago.

I must admit that I'm enjoying @dholliday irritating every person he interacts with at the moment with his condescending replies.

It's taken far too long for someone to fill Damo's shoes.

persecuting a religion is dangerous.

We all know what happened 70 years ago.

I've covered these two hoary old chestnuts already:

As debate against that doctrine is often shouted down as being itself prejudiced, the debate regresses into actual prejudice against peoples.

That old chestnut...shuts down debate quite nicely, doesn't it? Very useful like that.

If you're not shutting down knowingly, then you're making a typical student's error of judgement: for history's usefulness is not all-encompassing. It's a rough guide, not an absolute.

I’m not trying to shut down debate. Just giving my opinion

Criticising religious doctrine and its potential effects on secular society isn't the same thing as persecuting followers of that religion. For those making the argument that it is the same thing, they are automatically shutting down those critics, because there can never be an argument for persecution.

Hence, the debate goes underground. That's where it gets filthy. Filthy creates negative ripple-effects on both sides which the shutdowners ostensibly wanted to avoid: separatism, bitterness, hate.

From that perspective it's useful to hear Özil's detailed thoughts on the whole thing, but he has interpreted all critique to be persecution...which is problematic. Hence my thinking everyone (including Özil) may have been better off had he retired quietly.

I'm looking at this from the grand perspective of an entire nation. My personal view is that Özil's been unfairly villified and I for one celebrate what he brought to our football.

Thing is Thomas Mueller was crap and did nothing and same goes for Mats Hummels, Mario Gomez, Toni Cruz, Jerome Boateng and none of them got the same abuse as Ozil did.

Gundogan got booed when he came on too so I am inclined to think that those two are singled out due to more sinister reasons and Ozil just called it out

Oh man Mueller was awful. He looked so washed up that I thought we were going to place a bid in for him. I actually thought Boateng played OK (excellent in attack, meh on D, where he was often left alone).

Ozil, yea he was terrible too. Doesn't mean he deserved the majority of the stick. There was plenty to go around.

Nothing to debate.

Germany should be ashamed of their treatment of Ozil.
Oh hello. You're the fella who wandered about in very discombobulated fashion in the Martinez thread, many times declaring it "weird" that people in there were posting about Martinez. And now you autocratically declare in here that there's "nothing to debate"...are you sure this internet forum thingy's for you?

What I find weird about that thread is the over the top lengths people will go to discredit Martinez.

To make a blanket statement that Islam is a concern is precisely why I responded in the fashion I did. I knew Holliday would take exception to me making a blanket statement about Germany. It seems to have gone over his head though.
