So seeing a player play for more time means you're able to make a better judgement of their future ability. Personally I think you can judge someone's level of skill after not very long at all, there aren't that many situations in football that are unusual to the extent that you don't know how a player will deal with it when it happens. The only one I can think of is set pieces, you get the odd secret dead ball specialist that never gets a chance to take one. Do you think there's a possibility that Oviedo might come up with something in a game that we haven't seen before that makes him look like a better player?

So you really don't think players sometimes take time to adapt to a league ?

I'd answer the question if I knew what it meant.

Souness bought a player called Ali Dia after being told by his agent that he was a senegalese international who had played for PSG and was recomended by George Weah.

Souness gave him all of ten minutes in the prem before subbing him off again.

It turned out that he was an unemployed dishwasher from blyth and his agent had just blagged Souness, big style.

The point is, judging by these posts, it would be ridiculous to come to any conclusions about him based on ten minutes and Southampton should have given him more games to prove himself.

I think that was pretty much what I posted.

No, I think they do, but usually you can judge whether or not someone has the raw skill to do it. I think Oviedo's decent and I think he'll probably become a solid Premier League player. I'm happy to say that having only seen him play a little bit. By the same token, if someone doesn't think he's got the tools to make it at this level then why not. It's their opinion, might be wrong, might be right, and you can see how good a judge of a player they are by how well they call it.

I get you.

I respect Sharpy's right to have an opinion, but i also respect my right to tell him he's being stupid. Most of the issues people have with Oviedo is that he's too lighweight and gets pushed off the ball too easily, which is exactly the kind of thing which can improve with time.

Wasn't he meant to be his cousin or something?

e.g. MikelsGoat has seen loads of very talented players play really well for greatly extended periods of time and thinks they are all terrible.
