Out of the F.A Cup is a blessing in disguise

If we finished 4th we'd be also rans in the Champions League - happy just to be there with no real chance of winning it.

Chances are we wouldnt finish 4th again in the league that season either because of our paper thing squad. We might add a few faces but you wouldnt see a bucket load of cash being invested because you cant hand new players 4 or 5 year deals based on Champions League income. Give me the joy of a FA Cup win anyday

The merits of a Cup success should be judged on what it brings to a club, so lets do a checklist of the benefits of winning the FA Cup:

Major Prize Money (like the 40m you get from entering the CL)......................NO

Entry into the CL....................NO

Will your top players want to stay if you win it..........................NO

Entry into the Europa League.....................YES! But do you get major prize money for entering or even winning the EL? NO! Do you get into the CL if you win the EL? NO! Hence will your top players (e.g. Fellaini) want to stay if you enter or even win the EL? NO!

I hope you get what I'm trying to say now. And really things like Prize money, CL and keeping your best players are absolutely CRUCIAL if a club wants to grow and succeed and compete with the big guns, otherwise you may end up as a perennial mid table team unless a sugar daddy comes and saves you. And THIS is simply why 4th is more important mate! Like I said, the FA Cup is a nice day out for the fans BUT NOTHING ELSE! But hey, at least we both agree that the league cup is crap :)

You do not get £40m for entering the Champions League.

And tell me mate, if we qualify for the Champions League, where are we going to get the squad big enough to compete in Europe and the league at the same time ? If you're saying the cups have this huge effect on teams (which is total bs, imo) then the CL would thoroughly ruin our season, no ?

To say that the FA Cup is nothing but a nice day out for the fans shows your total lack of understanding of British football, and s***s all over a part of Everton's history. The FA Cup is and always has been a big competition.

It could be an advantage to still be left in the cup. Remember when we were playing very good until we went out of the Uefa cup against Fiorentina in 2008. A good cup run could boost the squad morale! COYB!

different times tho, back then the average age of the players was a lot lower and we could play 3 games a week no problem with more or less the same team, the team have already looked fatigued in some of the games recently, and we have to play full strength even against the lower teams.

people arent taking into consideration the players have aged since the last fa cup final and its hard to keep up that level we play at for every game

Until we get a money bags owner we have no chance of competing in the Champions league anyway. We've been out of europe for some time now so no doubt we'd get a stinker in the qualifying round, if we do get through sure it would be nice to host Bayern Munich, Barcelona et al but it wont be on our honours list. The CL money will be eaten up by improved contracts, leaving with us with probably £10m left to spend on players, Bill would probably hang around for a bit longer too.

I was 6 years old in the summer of 1995.

I've seen us finish 4th and that was nice but given the choice it'd be seeing us lift a trophy at Wembley all day long.

It may not be better for the clubs finances so call me selfish or whatever but right now i'd happily take sixth in the league and FA cup winners as a successful season and the most enjoyable one of my life so far!

As has been said, Spurs have the Europa League to contend with still.

And the RS are irrelevant in the race for 4th as Everton, Arsenal and Spurs aren't all going to slip up to allow them past us, it just isn't going to happen.

They may still finish above us though, I'm not ruling that out.

Ive read this today from the Spurs and the rs fans, that the 4th place is more important. True cos it brings lots of money. But its now only an extra 4 games now to win it so it not like overkill and gives them the advantage plus it a great day out and that what football is about. Dont liverpool and spurs have Europe football to come.

They wouldn't be saying it if they hadn't been knocked out. Just bad loser's.

Give me a cup anyday over finishing fourth.

No reason why we cant do both tbh.
But, you can understand the points for either or tbh.
FA Cup: Its a trophy ends an 18yr drought and also gives Moyes his first as EFC manager.
CL: Gives you money, which we need and it keeps the best players at the club.

But like i said, no reason why this team cant achieve both IMO.

And regarding money, CL qualification on its own doesnt give you anywhere near enough financial muscle to kick on and get 4th on a regular basis. The likes of Spurs and Liverpool spend plenty of money already, the CL funds for them are a big help, but they're not some instant ticket to the big time.

People saying the players would rather finish 4th than win the FA cup, say that to the likes of Baines, Osman, Neville, Anichebe, Hibbert, Gibson, Jagielka and Coleman. I doubt they'd agree with you.

Here's my take on it all:

Fans need to wake up, it's not the 1980's anymore! The FA Cup and Carling Cup are simply not what they used to be, and the bigger teams view them as more of an annoyance to their league and CL hopes. We as fans may not like it, and it's sad for British football, but it's the truth! These cup competitions only become SLIGHTLY relevant if a team hasn't won anything for a long time (like Arsenal - and even then Arsene Wenger doesn't seem arsed about getting knocked out of them early, cause he is then able to focus on top 4 more so than the other teams which is why he achieves it every single year)! And this is crucial to Arsenal's long-term growth and stability!

IMO you should only take the cups remotely seriously if you've got the squad, otherwise it can do serious damage to your league form, as proven numerous times - look at Liverpool last year, won the Carling Cup and got to the FA Cup final but finished 8th in the league as a result, and watching Pool last year it's obvious the cups had an effect! United and City can take them somewhat seriously cause they've got the squad, but even then they chose not to the vast majority of the time because they view them as a hindrance. E.g. the last time United won the FA Cup was in 04, and if they wanted to win it again they could have EASILY, but they simply just cant be arsed with it anymore cause it's a s*** competition! They only field their full strength team in the cup when they're playing a City or something.

So yeah, they are distractions until you reach the semis, and once you reach the final stages in April/May you try to rest your players in the league game, which has proven to be costly to league form. No matter how much you try to sugar coat it the likelihood of you doing well in the league are MUCH better if you're not in any cups - which lets face it is the most important thing! So the sooner you are out the better!

I say this because there are ACTUALLY no benefits for winning the cups! Absolutely none....contrary to what we may want to believe! It's a nice little bonus but nothing else! Barely any prize money, and you don't get into the CL for winning them. I know you get into the Europa but that's a rubbish competition too! It's all about the CL cause that's where the money's at and that's where the big players want to play! If you got into the CL, then great, go all out for the cups, but sadly that's not the case. Mid table/average players may enjoy winning the FA Cup, cause that's all they might ever have the chance to win, but quality players like Bale and Fellaini aren't gonna decide their fate on if their team wins the FA Cup this year, they just want CL, and clubs need to dictate to what their big players want otherwise they end up leaving and that's when you're screwed! Even the likes of Birmingham and Portsmouth have won cups recently FFS, and where did that get them? Relegation! There's just no benefit to these s***ty cups anymore, and it's all the FA's fault for not making them desirable/rewarding enough to win!

haha bollocks. try telling any other team apart from the sky 6 that the champions league is where it's at. a team like stoke or sunderland would love to be in europe. I bet middlesborough fans cherished their comeback wins on the way to the final more than their worthington cup win or whatever it was over bolton? i bet fulham's greatest memory was their 4-1 win over juventus. just because RS fans are too moronic to face facts and see that qualifying for europa is a success now rather than the unrealistc target of champions league, there's no need to demean the competition mate. football goes further down the best 30 odd teams in europe.

stop making a sorry excuse for the pathetic humbling of oldham athletic
