i(think) i know why they have the rules in there to keep the big teams from running amok but really, the better a league is the more people will watch it. The more people that watch it the more people in that country realize that its something they could make a significant living doing. If they basically expanded the franchise player limit(or whatever its called in the MLS) to 4-6 it would improve the league significantly. Eventually homegrown players would start participating. The 2 is pretty restricting.

90k grand a week, no wonder he couldn't get over there quick enough. That's a ludicrous wage for somebody who isn't a regular for a top seven Premier League club and doesn't often get a game for his national team. I reckon I could get 20k easy for a MLS team!

Designated player rule is what it's called, where you can pay them as much as you want and it won't count towards salary. I believe they're up to 3 slots per team now.

I think at this point the majority of the World Cup roster for the US will be MLS-based players. There's a handful in the Prem, one or two in Bundesliga, one in Ligue 1, nobody now in Serie A or La Liga, and a few scattered about the middle of the pack continental leagues and Mexico.

I think a majority of Canada's regular callups also play in MLS, as well as good number of internationals from Central America and the Caribbean.

It's because the NASL went bust spending stupid money, so they're trying to restrict it, problem is that you have lads there on $40k a year, but they've got a decent tv deal there now and their bargaining agreement is due for renewal soon so that should hopefully improve

Quite a few South Americans too end up there, can make more money than in their domestic league and would probably be a bigger star in the US than in their domestic league

No whispers yet. There was loose chatter of Shane Long as a 3rd choice but I think as Defoe will be with us until Feb27th we will probably just go with what we have for now.

Sounds risky, especially as Soldado can't score from open play, Adebayor has his sulks/issues/whatever and Lamela hasn't really settled yet.

West Ham just offered Lescott 90K/week wages and 70K/week if they get relegated. WTF? Football, how does it work?

They need decent defenders and he probably wouldn't be tempted there for footballing reasons, especially if they go down, so they have to try and tempt him some other way.

Yep. Very few of their full internationals do, though. For them there's still probably a selection bias against playing outside of the big CONMEBOL or UEFA leagues.

Also we don't have anything as glamorous as the Copa Libertadores.

Just looking at Rodgers' transfer business. According to Transfermarkt, in the summer he bought:

Sakho £16.7m Age 23, 13 starts/1 goal
Mignolet £9.3m Age 25, 23 starts
Aspas £7.9m Age 26, 6 starts/5 sub/1 goal
Ilori £7.2m Age 20, 0 appearances
Alberto £7m Age 21, 2 starts/8 sub
Moses loan (£1m fee?) Age 23, 8 starts/7 sub/1 goal
Cissokho loan (£0.8m fee?) Age 26, 9 starts/1 sub

So, say he spent £49.9m and recouped £28.7m on Carroll, Downing, Shelvey etc his net spend is £21.2m.

£16.7m is a lot to spend on a centre back, especially when Skrtel has been a virtual ever-present, Agger is your vice-captain and you also have Toure available.

Over £21m on Aspas, Ilori and Alberto is a bit of a mystery. If they're not ready wouldn't it have been better to have sent them back out on loan and to have kept Borini (3 goals for Sunderland), Suso (2 goals for Almeria) and Assaidi (4 goals for Stoke) to help the team?

And Moses doesn't seem to have slotted in at all.
