If the assumption is that they would be as successful in this era as they were in their own it would have to Dixie Dean.
A team with a striker getting scoring as he did would be guaranteed success and of course his value would be enormous.
 
Difficult one, thing we are well stocked in centre mid and have our main striker covered, full backs aren't bad either. Leaves support for Rom or wide player, centre back or keeper. I think the weakest link in our team is currently Funis Mori so I'm going to go for one Kevin Ratcliffe, think his pace at the back would be excellent.
would be the single biggest improvement.

Prime-aged Rooney. Imagine a number 10 like that feeding balls to Rom. The big guy would score 30+ goals a season consistently. Along with another 10-15 from Rooney himself.
 

...Robles is doing ok so I'm not thinking Southall would make a major difference (brilliant though he was). I like the Rooney shouts, but a certain Peter Beardsley might also give us that vital bit of creativity.
Mate come on Neville would have saved us 5 points without really thinking.
