Liverpool defender Ronnie Moran is furious as Everton's Fred Pickering scores a goal for Everton on April 19, 1964 in a 4-0 away win for us - we had fielded a weakened team too - those were the days - Brian Harris stand in Captain that day at right back stated to his team I am going to hospital - ? why they asked - to get this big smile taken of my face :D

Thanks Joey. I am really enjoying Rob Sawyer's The Emerald Evertonians. I highly recommend it to all Blues and to supporters of the two 'Ireland' teams north and south.

Sawyer really captures the passion and warmth of Peter, and the man that I had the privilege to have known in the 80s, travelling on the 46A to see Shamrock Rovers.

Sawyer is very accurate in his writing including Peter's winning bets against Everton team mates on the result of the England v Ireland game at GP in 1949. One detail he omitted was that Peter also bet that he would score in that game- I love the quote from Peter that he just closed his eyes and hit it!!

As one born in Dún Laoghaire I salute Sawyer's accurate spelling of my birthplace, including the fada (accent) on the u which lengthens the vowel and is pronounced 'oo'.

Thanks for bringing this superb book to my attention Joey.

….i’ll certainly get that book if I can.

I presume you’re not far from Howth. Went there once with my mates, we were staying in Dublin for Irish Derby at Curragh and got the Dart to Howth the day before. I’d got a tip for a horse called Ruby Tiger that was running that day, there was a small bookmaker at the bottom of a steep set of steps and a pub at the top.

Everybody backed Ruby Tiger and it sluiced in. Myself and 2 mates also had it with 9-1 and 12-1 winners, we literally cleaned that little bookie out, he wasn’t best pleased. It was pre-Euro, he said he’d pay us out in sterling if we won but he didn’t have enough. Told us to F-Off as we were walking out.
