Of course he will come back to haunt us at some point, some team from a lower division that play Brilliant Attacking Football and bamboozle our defence with mazy runs that include stepovers & knock us out of a cup comp with a cross that somehow finds the top corner.

I didn't think he was a good captain. He was constantly one of our worst performers over the past two and a bit years and yet still got given the armband. I know, not his fault, but he was still captain while being by far the worst player.

I appreciate he was a good right back at the start of his time with us, but he quickly lost his ability and became a liability.

A good pro, but for me not a good captain, and nowhere near Premier League level since about 2011.

I suppose it depends on what you want from the captain. If you want someone to lead by example, then you're right, defo not up to standard.

But as a motivator (and pointer!) still pretty good.

Was more that this is probably the reason this is happening and a good point.

It's good news. I don't mind him but we are better than the level he can currently play at now.

Wish him well in future now.

I'm only messing lid! Makes sense. Also means that Moyes is staying though!

He's been a very good captain for us and a thoroughly dedicated professional. He was never the most skilled player but his leadership and desire made him a good captain of our club. Unfortunately age has now caught up with him and I hope he gets himself in with another club and settles in well, and I don't think there'll be any shortage of lower league clubs wanting his signature. I like Nev and I think the Wigan game probably hurt him as much as it hurt us. You could tell it really dented his pride. That was probably the final point of realisation for him.

Thanks Phil.

All the best, Nev. Never anything other than totally dedicated on the pitch and off it. I hope he gets to continue his playing career and makes a successful transition into coaching.

Genuinely think he was a decent captain. I'm gutted he is leaving the club completely, I would have liked to have seen him in a coaching role at the club.

It does make you wonder whether it gives a slight indication as to whether Moyes is staying/leaving in the summer.

Good luck Phil!

This was a moment I will never forget.

I think the timing of the announcement is a little strange, we should be focusing on the next game against QPR and ending the season as high up the table as possible. I know Champions League may be out of reach now, but 5th place is still a possibility and we could get into Europe and attract a replacement for Neville and others.

I don't have anything against Neville, I think he has given his best every time he has played for us and as a club captain, he has represented us well. I wish him all the best for the future and I think he will probably move to a club at the bottom of the Premiership or top of the championship. Or perhaps he will take a job on BT Vision (who are taking over from ESPN)

Maggie Thatcher dying and this within 24 hours. What a 24 hours. Been waiting for this day for 8 years. See you Phil you phoney. Never darken our doorstep again.
