2021/22 Niels Nkounkou

He's got something about him but I think he's also a young lad needing regular minutes to develop which he wont get here with Digne playing 90 minutes most weeks.

He needs playing time. He is too talented to not have it. But by god, our fullback situation is dire. If our team doesn’t stay remarkably healthy, it could be another wasted season. Coleman has been decent in fairness, but that upgrade has to come soon. Hopefully Niels kills it on loan and brings that confidence here.

I genuinely think Benitez sees his full back options as this:

RB: Coleman, Holgate
LB: Digne, Godfrey

He is not going to indulge attacking players who will not defend and get caught upfield.

And probably why the decision has been made not to send Branthwaite out on loan. if we get short in the full back areas, Holgate covers right back, Godfrey covers either full back position and Branthwaite then covers centre half.

It’s Benitez’s philosophy. Pace, power, size, dependability. He’ll play 4 CBs no problem if it keeps a clean sheet.

Given the shambles we’ve been the last 5 years, and how poor our players are at passing football I can’t say I disagree with the approach. We can’t play Nkonkou in any defence that has Michael Keane or Mina lumbering around in it.

At his age he has to play regularly. Hopefully Digne is playing most of the games. Does anyone know if there is a call back clause if we get injuries?
