Niall Quinn's Champions League Playoff Proposal

Platini is considering scrapping the Europa League and having the 7 top Prem team in the CL. The lower teams are in the qualifiers. This is the best idea.

If there was a play off system, I'd like it to work something like this: 4th automatically gets to the final, 7th plays 6th in the first match, the winner of that match plays 5th, and then the winner of the second match plays 4th in the final. Just one game for each round, played at the ground of the team that finished highest with the final at Wembley.

Or you could shorten it to just the 4th team getting into the playoff final and hosting it (reward for finishing 4th) and have 5th and 6th play for the right to join them.

There's enough incentive to finish 4th there while still expanding the opportunity. If you finish 4th you only have to win one game at home. But if you finish 6th you still have a shot, although you'd have to win 2 away from home. But to me, if this was in place this year and we won at Spurs and at Arsenal (or the other way around) we'd deserve it.

Loser in the final gets the Europa spot and in a year where it goes down to 6th, the loser in the first round get the other spot.

The only reason I wouldn't favor the FA Cup winner getting a CL spot is Wigan this year. You can't have a relegated team playing the CL.

I doubt Wigan would have won the competition if there was a CL spot at stake. You'd have clubs like Everton, Tottenham and Liverpool making it their first priority, and even the top four regulars would go after it as an insurance policy should they drop a few league places.

There'd also be the added fun of seeing dopes like Newcastle go down after resting players for FA Cup ties.

I still believe that this is pretty unfair on fourth place.
It probably will get introduced though, to allow the premier league/sky to make as much money out of liverpool as they can

Could probably say the same about the team that finishes 3rd in the Championship, Watford finished with a higher points tally but it could be Palace who finished 5th who gets promoted.

Playoff scenarios are fair when you realize that all teams are aware of the rules before the season starts. 4th place guarantees you nothing but a spot in the playoff. If you don't like it, STFU and finnish 3rd or higher, or STFU and win the playoff. It only becomes unfair when they make up the rules after the fact, which will never happen.

If this playoff were to be introduced, I hope everyone will understand that it was created to accomodate the RS.

It would help us too. Most years under Moyes we'd be in that playoff. Law of averages says we would have made at least once or twice.

I've never liked those sort of things though. Rugby league is **** for it. I mean, you can finish 8th out of 13 or whatever and win the title!?

country cross over games would be cool. Who wouldn't want to end the season with a continental matchup with CL/Europa on the line. This year, we play on the road vs 5th place in Spain, 6th place in Spain plays at Spurs, winners play at Arsenal and 4th place Spain. Something like that.

But the Champions League is a week after the Premiership finishes. How do you organise it all at such short notice? Or do you organise it all before hand and then cancel it if Chelsea win the CL. It's a logistical nightmare. What if it was a Euros or WC year?
The FA Cup was after the CL final for a while wasn't it? It's only twice I believe since the CL format started that a team has won and not qualified via their league. It doesn't feel like a deal-breaker to me. Yes it would require a little work to get everything lined up but it doesn't seem impossible. You'd have to organize and then cancel ... but the revenue they'd make from the games when they do happen (which would be most years) would vastly eclipse the cost of cancelling an event once a decade if required.

One major problem I can forsee.

Suppose a team.....let's dream a little and say it is out own dear Everton.....makes it to the CL final.

And finishes 6th in the league, just like we have done.

The play off semi final is announced and it is Spurs v Liverpool and Everton v Arsenal.

And Everton go on to win the CL final the week after the regular season ends and a few days before the Arsenal play off semi, thereby gaining entry to next season's CL as defending champions.

I still love this idea, though.......but that scenario is very possible.

(well maybe not the EFC in the final bit but you know what I mean)

In actual fact, that is the exact position Chelsea would have been in last season when the finished 5th or 6th but won the CL.
