Niall Quinn's Champions League Playoff Proposal

Of course, The Champion League is now boring for me, all the same teams every year.

this happened when they started seeding teams and making stipulations that 'no english team can play each other until the quarter finals'. Why..exactly? Because it preserves the status quo. cant have chelsea, man u, real madrid and barcelona in the same group, nooooope.

If there was a play off system, I'd like it to work something like this: 4th automatically gets to the final, 7th plays 6th in the first match, the winner of that match plays 5th, and then the winner of the second match plays 4th in the final. Just one game for each round, played at the ground of the team that finished highest with the final at Wembley.

That's definately a fairer way of doing it. Gives an advantage to those that finished highest.

Would of been better over the last decade, not sure its required now though because thanks to Everton and now Spurs, combined with the decline of Liverpool the gap has closed to the point that realisticly, Everton, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal are fighting for the 4th spot and the competition is finally starting to open up.

This combined with new management for Chelsea, City, United, Everton, Liverpool last year, and everything is kind of up in the air and a free for all, for the first time in decades I think how next season goes is going to be anyone's guess.

Or it might just be
United
City
Chelsea
Arsenal as per usual.

What if it was like last year though when Chelsea finished 6th but won the competition, meaning 4th place wasn't up for qualification? The playoff would be meaningless.

The sides that win the playoffs tend to be the sides in form rather than the best sides over the season. This could lead to lesser sides making the Champions League and then not doing very well in it, meaning the Uefa Co-efficient is reduced and we could lose a place.

If they are going to change it I prefer the 1 European Trophy option. 7 clubs from the Premier League go in to it. The top 2 automatically go to the group stages. Whereas the other sides play it out in seeded knockout games in August/September. Seeded based on how you qualified from your country. ie. The 'Europa type' qualifiers would have low seedings and would need to play more games, the 4th placed side maybe 2 games and the 3rd placed side just the one game. It'd make August/September more interesting, as knockout games are far better to watch than group games.

I really like this idea.

First off I no more care if teams in the CL are technically "champions" than I care if anyone in the Prem works for Barclays. I was bored to tears with that argument 20 years ago when they first called it the Champions League and people are still prattling on about it like it has anything to do with anything. Have you heard what they are calling the second division now mate? It's a joke really!

No idea why people suggest the FA Cup should get a CL spot when the FA Cup winner is typically a top four side (I realize I am on thin ice considering who won this year but look at the last 10-20 years as a whole) and we only won a domestic Cup once every 20-25 years even when we were one of the best teams in the country and didn't have Moyes destroying our glorious Cup record.

The teams in 4-7 are all better than Wigan. Plus who gets the spot if a team in 1-3 wins the FA Cup (like they do a lot of the time)? The runner-up?!?!?! What if they are already in as well? Back to fourth? Or can we do a playoff then? Let me know when you think it's okay for the most exciting thing, the thing that would make the most money for the league/teams, and the best thing for Everton to be implemented because in my crazy mind that's the first thing I'd do.

The top four teams certainly only look out for themselves -- we're not going to get anywhere promoting "the best idea" (which is debatable anyway) ahead of "the best idea for Everton."

Spurs, Arsenal, RS will (in the immediate future) all be in the mix for 4-7 every single year but they won't all be in the mix to win the Cup every single year. That idea is dead on arrival once you factor in a no vote from the top three.

I think if they voted on this again it might pass -- it's probably our best shot of ever making the CL (while it may only have less than 1% chance of becoming reality that's still way better odds than a billionaire takeover).

This is a great idea. Gives everyone a fighting chance. Plus it's extra tv and gate revenue for those involved and would increase the premier leagues stock in counties like America.

Its not really about the name. The fact is that in the old format you used to end up with a side who were the genuine champions of Europe (ie they had won their domestic league and had then won the European cup). You don't get that anymore. I don't care what they call it.

(And yes I agree calling the second division the "Championship" is rubbish).

Yep, "seeding" in the Champions league is a euphemism for fixing.

Well obviously you wouldn't do it then. Not a major stumbling block.

But the Champions League is a week after the Premiership finishes. How do you organise it all at such short notice? Or do you organise it all before hand and then cancel it if Chelsea win the CL. It's a logistical nightmare. What if it was a Euros or WC year?

Not to mention by next Saturday most of the other players will already be sunning themselves in Barbados.

...its not for me. There could be a huge different in points between 4th and 7th and it wouldn't seem fair at the end of a long hard season.
I've always been of the opinion that the team finishing 3rd from bottom should be included in the play-offs with the Championship clubs, but a play-off for 4th is not for me.
