sorry mate the passion of the night got to me, but in fairness having the toon army for inspriation for poetry is like tying to rewrite 50 shades of grey with a picture of margret thatcher on the blob with her clunge spread for inspriation ,. it just wouldnt workThe spirit of Oscar Wilde lives on, you can't beat passionate poetry, you're bard.
Totally agree with this!
I hate EFCTV!
I'm trying to watch the highlights from last night but apparently it's not available in my region? Is it because I'm a wool FFS?
I am no fan of Neville at CM or anywhere else (except the bench, or even better in the stands), but I thought he did ok last night tbh. In other words, he wasn't great but equally he wasn't as gash as he normally is. At the moment we are almost down to picking anyone who can run (hello Naismith).
Brilliant Baines free-kick and super-sub Anichebe give Evertonians a happy start to the new year:
Newcastle - Team Rating - 6: A good first half and did look dangerous at times. Looked tired in the second half, mainly due to a lack of squad depth.
GK: Krul - 7: A solid performance after conceding so many goals in recent matches. Got the ball up the pitch quickly and showed good vision for a keeper. Made some good saves against Baines and Pienaar. Beaten by the curve on Baines free-kick.
RB: Perch - 5: Didn't get forward enough and was given a run-around from Baines and Pienaar. Did a job and was unlucky not to get a goal mid-way through the second half when he hit the woodwork with a header.
CB: Williamson - 5: Couldn't handle Jelavić's work-rate throughout the game, and was often caught out by the movement of Baines and Pienaar. Good block to stop a goal-bound Fellaini shot. Booked.
CB: Coloccini - 5: Tried to keep Fellaini as quiet as he could but struggled with his strength and ball control all game. The Argentine and Williamson were opened up by the Everton attack on multiple occasions. Caught out of position too often.
LB: Santon - 6: Did well going forward and had Naismith in his pocket in the first half. However, the young full-back struggled to deal with Victor Anichebe's power in the second half. Fluffed his lines with a good opportunity to equalise when he would've been better suited to pass to an unmarked Cissé.
CM: Tioté - 4: Hasn't shown any of his form from last season in recent weeks and had a poor game against The Toffee's midfield. Lucky not to give away a penalty for dragging down Naismith in the area which the linesman somehow missed. Resorted to fouling the opposition if he was beaten. Newcastle fans will be hoping he improves after his return from the ACON. Lucky not to get sent off. Booked.
CM: Anita - 6: Looked a better player than Tioté yesterday. Knocked the ball around well when he got hold of it and started attacks well in the first half. Defended well when needed and got forward to a decent effect. Worked hard but was shipped out wide in the second half.
RM: Cissé - 7: Played well and was a threat all game. Scored a good early goal and made good runs off the wing; getting into good positions but often not picked out by his teammates. Will have to step up into a central role - which he prefers - now compatriot Demba Ba has left. Wasted on the wing. Booked.
AM: Marveux - 6: Seems to have found his best position playing in the #10 role; it was obvious in the Goodison game in September that he lacked the defensive ability to be a wide midfield player in the Premiership. Looked sharp when going forward.
LM: Obertan - 6: Threatening at times but kept under-control by Jagielka and then by Baines when he switched flanks. Often stayed on the ball for too long and faded in the second half.
ST: Ameobi - 5: Tried to hold the ball up was dispossessed easily by the Everton defence when he had no support from the midfield. Missed a great opportunity to take the lead in the second half after a great touch in the box.
Subs:
Bigirimana - 5: Struggled to get on the ball when he came on but worked hard. Gave ball away too often which allowed Everton to counter-attack.
S.Ameobi - 6: Worked hard and his pace was a threat.
Ranger - 5: Didn't have an effect on the game.
Manager - Alan Pardew - 5: Set up his team to play a long-ball game which wasn't a threat once the Everton defence adapted to Krul's punts after a few shaky mistakes. His subs show that his squad lack depth. Needs another striker now Ba has left.
Everton - Team Rating - 7: Deserved the win after a shaky first half-hour. Showed grit and determination to comeback and win against difficult opposition.
GK: Howard - 7: Has been better in the last two games although he may have stayed on his line for the Cissé goal - although it was by no means his fault. Generally better positionally and made some good saves. Needs to keep a clean-sheet soon.
RB: Jagielka - 6: Doing well playing out of position in recent games, but should be moved back to central defence as soon as possible. Kept Obertan under control but not a threat going forward.
CB: Heitinga - 5: Targeted by Newcastle due to his aerial weakness and was at fault (along with Distin) for the Cissé goal. Lacked pace and was beaten by the Newcastle attack several times. Finally settled into the game in the second-half. Booked.
CB: Distin - 8: Played well after making a mistake for the Cissé goal. Used his pace, strength and experience well to keep the Newcastle attack under control. Another great performance.
LB: Baines - 9: Possibly his best performance since the Newcastle game in September, although he's been consistently brilliant all season. Thunderbolt of a free-kick made up for a slight marking mistake for Newcastle's goal. Unlucky with two other free-kicks and his set-pieces were a constant danger. His link-up play with Pienaar tore apart Newcastle's right-side on several occasions. Excellent throughout.
CM: Neville - 6: Some slack passes in midfield but generally defended well. Added a confidence to our team which helped us see out the game. Worked hard for a tough win - and has the war-scars to prove it!
CM: Osman - 6: Relatively quiet game but kept things ticking over in midfield. Didn't get past the halfway line much when The Toffee's chose to see out the game for the valuable three points.
RM: Naismith - 4: After playing well against Wigan and putting a shift in against Chelsea, he was inconspicuous throughout his 55-minute stint last night. Never troubled Santon and couldn't defend when tracking back. He isn't a winger and would be better deployed as a Second Striker. Still worked hard but gave ball away too often, breaking down the Everton attack.
AM: Fellaini - 7: By no means his best game but still a massive threat to the Newcastle defence and a huge-boost for Everton. Brought players into the game well and linked up brilliantly at times with Jelavić and Pienaar. Made some good tackles and had a great chance to make it 1-1 in the first-half. Made some silly mistakes which were most likely due to a lack of match-sharpness.
LM: Pienaar - 7: Another solid performance after a great-showing against Chelsea. Held onto the ball well and his link up with Baines was, as always, superb. Unlucky to not score after latching onto Baines defence splitting pass. Great ball that lead to the Anichebe winner. Booked.
ST: Jelavić - 7: Always a threat to the Newcastle defence with his constant movement and high work-rate. Great control to hold-up the ball and start swift counter-attacks when Everton got forward. Beat Coloccini for pace and provided a brilliant assist for Anichebe's winner. Didn't have any real chances despite creating for others; would have likely slotted home the Fellaini chance if it had have fallen to him.
Subs:
Anichebe - 7: Did brilliantly after coming off the bench to have an instant and made a great run to finish off a brillaint team goal. If he plays like this every game, he may finally realise some of his potential. Should be so much better than he is, but needs to keep his fitness up. Held up the ball well at the end. Could've worked harder defensively.
Oviedo - 6: Did well to run down the clock when he came on. Always provides a good option off the bench.
Manager - David Moyes - 8: Clever sub at the right-time won Everton the game. Organised the team after the bad start. Naismith shouldn't be started on the right, and he should be able to concentrate on attacking. Oviedo may have been a better option.
Referee - Martin Atkinson - 6: Good decision for the Newcastle penalty claim and generally let the game flow. Was picky with slight challenges and barges on occasion but no glaring errors.
Still in a right good mood from this result last night. I thought beforehand if we lost then it would show up the fact we weren't serious top 4 contenders, so I have to say on the other hand, we proved yet again the resolve we have. Although we still have clear problems defensively, the fact we can go to a ground, give 50,000+ fans the perfect start after barely over a minute yet know we still thought we could get at least a draw, if not a win, is a brilliant skill to have. And so it proved. Just like West Ham, we weathered pressure, composed ourselves, and set about getting back into the game which we did, thanks in no small part to some composure on the ball from the likes of Osman, Pienaar etc.
With the cup coming up next, it might be a chance for a few players to have a mini-break before the next league game. I'd try to hold back Baines, Osman, Pienaar and Jelavic (bench perhaps). I'm not saying change everyone because not only would that be foolish, we don't really have the squad to go and make 11 changes. I'd without doubt start Barkley, and give the likes of Oviedo and Gueye a chance to impress. Give Anichebe the chance to continue some momentum; I'd start Fellaini mind considering he's had 3 games off recently. Maybe give Kennedy a run-out?
Will Tiote get a 3 game ban?
the last time we gave a few players a rest leeds beat us, we need a good cup run again like last season. in fact we need a cup back at Everton i rather the FA Cup than europa league football.
