I was a bit downhearted after the game on Saturday as it just reminded me of last season where we continually drew games we should have won. It's understandable though as it's the same players I suppose and Martinez will need some serious time.

On watching a re run of the game you can see that we dominated them and they got extremely lucky. We played really good togger so it's a start. The obvious test will be when we play decent teams. I think we'll do better against poorer teams this year though overall.

can someone describe percentage football please

for me, percentage football is long balls played forward looking for the knock down or the second phase to lead to an attack or a chance.

ie. hit fellaini, some he wins, some he loses, some drop, some dont. With Moyes it was never gracefully played out of defense with control, it came out with a hoof, then we went from there.

When Rodwell came into the City side at the back end of last season after his injuries, he showed more in those games than he did in the whole of his Everton career.

Of course he had better players around him, but he looked like he was taking the game by the scruff of the neck himself.

Not a Moyes basher, but I am sure some players he had could have been developed a lot better.

No complaints of him overall though, he was shrewd enough to spot the potential in the likes of Coleman amongst others.

He was spotted by Willie McStay who took him to Celtic. When they declined to take up the option McStay tipped off Moyes.

We've only played 1 competitive game so far under Martinez, and got 1 point.

Let's give it a bit of time before we go comparing him to Moyes and how winning the passing will win us points too.

A grossly erroneous oversimplification of Moyes' football style. Considering Fellaini only played that advanced role for half a season what were we doing for the other 10? At times we did go long to Fellaini's chest but this was part of the variety of our player that made us a good team last year. Most of our moves started with Baines playing infield to Osman and Gibson and we'd go from there. When all these options were cut off by teams that pressed we could go long to Fellaini and then bring our playmakers into the game.

Playing long balls or percentage football to my mind involves defenders lumping it down the lines or into the corners for forwards to chase or for a forward to flick on. It has been a long time since we did that. When was the last time you saw Baines or Coleman just aimlessly curl one up the line in the hope of a forward running into the corner for it? Barely ever last season. Instead we have had years of Baines and Pienaar having some wonderful interplay and last season Mirallas and Coleman providing a great direct running threat. We've tended to have some pretty lazy forwards recently and they have certainly not looked for flick ons from Fellaini or bothered to chase balls into the corner.

Ultimately the only telling phase of football is what you do in the final third. Last seaosn we ocmpleted more passes than anyone in an opponents final third. In my opinion too many as teams usually got everyone back and made it difficult for us. How does it matter how youg get to that position. If you spend 5 mins passing it aorund before working it through midfield or you hit Fellaini and then work it aorund the end result is the same. One thing we never did last season was just aimlessly luanch balls into the box hoping for a knock down or a lucky bounce. That is percentage football and is somehting that I didn't see at all last season.

Ok.. Rodwell started 2 games towards the end of the season, was subbed in both. The second was a home defeat to Norwich on the last day (a game that there is no chance you have watched), and the first a scruffy 1-0 win against West Brom (again question if you've really watched it). He had 5 minutes against Swansea and of course came on for 20 minutes of Man City's disgusting FA cup final defeat.

Sorry but i think you are kidding yourself.

So moyes played football then? Did he ****e, he made us hard to beat and i think the only time in Moyes reign that distin didnt hit row fkin Z was when he put it on a plate for Suarez in the semi.

When we had the ball, Moyes tried to play it in the final third...he got the ball there as quick as possible. It was very rarely controlled. It just seemes that way cos Fellaini wins 9/10 balls played up to him.

Moyes was a horrible negative tw@t and i hold him fully responsible for us not winning a trophy or getting us close to 4th last season with the combination of a) our players and b how every other team tried there best not to get 4th until the last 8/9 games.

If he had gone for the win more often, instead of bringing JH on in the last 10 minute to defend a lead we would have finished 4th cos i can think of at least 6 games when he cost us points.

Maybe if his side had been able to keep the ball for 70% of the time, we wouldnt have constantly been put under pressue by 5hite teams in the last 10 minutes and finished higher in the league.

Ask City fans what they think of him, you will get your answer.

Not claiming to have watched every minute of City's games, of course not.

To quote a City fan "After watching how brilliant he was as a box to box mid the end of last season...anyone who thinks we should stick him in defence needs their heads testing!"

I speak regularly with a city season ticket holder, they like him a lot.

I had said it many times on here. I think Rodwell looked bogged down by defensive duties when with us. Like he was trying to be something alien to him.

Compare how he looked for us, to his 2 England games, Different player. For me was all about the tactics asked of him.

Have just text my mate in Manchester, asked him about Rodwell. One word answer;
'Meh'

He's shown at City exactly what he did at Everton. Lots of injuries, hints of promise, sound technical ability and lots of mediocre nothingness.
Hugely frustrating player, if only he had anything like say Gerrards desire.

Gerrard benefitted massively from coming into a Liverpool squad not only full of good players but to a club who could always go out and spend big on signings and pi55 loads of money away. Basically, he had no pressure, felt he at first he didnt deserve to be there so worked his bollocks off to be the best and prove to everyone he was good enough.

We get a decent kid and our fans detroy them. Moyes also to a certain extent but our fans have a massive part to play.

Look at Stones and Barkley now, both 19, both showing massive potential, but because of our lack of signings/money/board ambition (whatever) were so desperate for them to come in and be like £20M signings i think its too much for pretty much most of them.

When we get a gem, the worry is they actually are great too young...and making multi millionaires out of teenagers can remove your desire to become a top player. When things dont go well and our fans expect too much, our fans are c*nts tbh and get on the kids back far too quick and far too often.

If we were actually in a position of signing quality players for the starting 11 it would do the kids the world of good to come in to no pressure and no expectation. We too quick to desperately turn them into our big signings/prospects...

all of this is IMO of course
