Nope. I was pleased, because it was an improvement on the previous season, not a massive one but an improvement all the same. Then the following season happened and the one after and it became more and more obvious that we had a lame duck manager. They're never going to please all the fans. The new owners shouldn't be trying to. They should be picking people who they think fits their strategy for the club.

They've got a manager who has lots of PL experience, who has taken on struggling clubs before and got a tune out of them, who can work with limited resources but who has a very extensive knowledge of players (given they don't seem to put much faith in Thelwell). Additionally the two interim managers were players he has a long relationship with. He knows the ground, the training ground.

It's the safest possible appointment and one that they've made very quickly.

In terms of stats sure. In terms of reality its nothing. 5th and 6th place both resulted in Europa League togger. 4th place in 04-05 will always be a bigger achievement and even that is hardly a real one.

Even if we'd got 4th place and matched Moyes's biggest achievement, it still wouldn't have justified the following two seasons. We didn't though because we finished fifth because four teams did better then us Dave.

I feel like this is nothing to do with ambition. We are not in the right place to get someone like Mourinho. They'd require a more stable environment, with lots of player investment etc. I think we are still pretty hampered by FFP so will need someone with experience that can steady things for now, until we are in a position to take the next step.

We'll never know because we didn't do enough and ended up finishing 5th. Maybe if the manager had been flexible with his precious philosophy we would've but we'll never know.
