We have no captains. People saying MCCARTHY but he doesn't organise and lead like (dare I say it) Neville did.

He was horrific to watch as a player, especially in midfield, but his 'captain skills' were taken for granted. Jags isn't a captain, we don't have a real stalwart centre half captain or a midfield warrior that martials his teammates and lifts everyone, it's worrying.

I agree, Baines isn't captain material, I'm not convinced about McCarthy either.

Basically there's no obvious replacement for Jagielka as captain. The ones who have the required leadership qualities aren't guaranteed a start and the ones guaranteed a start, aren't captain material.

Longer term, I'd chuck the armband at Besic or Stones, but, for now, while Jags isn't ideal, I'm struggling to see a good reason to remove the captaincy from him.
Totally agree. I'm not 100% on McCarthy either but he's one of the few who plays in the middle that is old enough, not too old and plays every game.

I think Coleman of last season would have had the right attitude but I prefer Captains to be in the middle. Baines must not want it which is fair enough, no point forcing it on someone.

Mirallas might actually be a decent shout. He's a fighter especially in the big games and it might sweeten the deal for him to stay.

He was Moyes on the pitch. That's what Martinez needs so I guess Barry right now is the right choice but I still think even though he played well last night he shouldn't be a guaranteed starter.

I like Jagielka a lot, been a superb player for us and that, but he's not a Captain is he.
Look at other teams, your Terry's, Gerrard's, Shawcross, all of them are in the referee's face and actually helping their teammates. Yesterday when Creswell and Besic were having a little bit, i didnt see Jagielka once, the only player i saw try and back up Besic was Eto'o.

The question was is Jags showing a lack of leadership. The first thing that happens when a manager has lost the dressing room is that all leadership disappears on the pitch.

No it isn't. The first thing that happens is he puts posters up on all the lamp posts asking if anyone has seen it.

Really though, that isn't the first thing that happens because there is no 'first thing' that happens every time.

Far, far worse than Distin last night.

the brutal reality is that Everton and England both play better without him in the side.

He should take himself out of the equation and declare himself unfit...which he is in a very real sense.

We play with 10 men in the side with him in it....or worse than that when he's ballsing things up. Simply not having him there on the pitch would give us a lift and may even allow another player to rapidly come through as a more vocal leader on the pitch.

I went off him being captain when he knelt there watching as diego costa taunted coleman, the way howard reacted is the way I expect the captain and leader on the pitch to react. Look at how baines reacted when he was captain against arsenal last season when arteta was taunting barkley, i have never seen jagielka stand up for one of his team mates in that manner.

What is a captain ? Is it the man who gives out the verbals or a man that leads by example with his feet ?
For example i always thought Carragher was captain material because of his knowledge, experience and respect he commanded in the dressing room. Compared to Gerrard who simply led with his ability and knack of frontin' the referee for every decision ?

In relation to EFC i would say Jags is too nice, Baines could have a real nasty streak inside him if he was told to go and lead the team.

They've been appalling marking from corners and free kicks for the past three seasons. Just shocking. It's always been a standing joke, so no good you saying it's a recent phenomenon. It's worse now because the two duffers at the heart of the defence are that much older and that much worse...and if you add in the likelihood of them not giving a shiny one then you get the type of clueless and gutless displays they've been largely responsible for.

"It's all about zonal marking" blah blah blah.

It's much more prosaic than that, and you know it.
Have to agree with you here Dave, the centre back pairing of Jags and Distin is so far past its sell by date it's becoming highly embarrassing and needs addressing in this transfer window.
Surely all Blues can see this.
