2025/26 Nathan Patterson

Ralston and Hickey can both be described as infinitley superior to Patterson.

Literally every Everton manager since he signed has give him a chance, and they've all basically said 'not for me'.

He comes in and he looks good, because he can be tidy on the ball and gets up and down the line. Problem is though, when he gets up, there's very little end product and you're just shooting yourself in the foot at that point.

We, as fans, assume everybody had a good game and made minimal mistakes if we won. The scouts though, the analytics guys, the coaches and the manager notice positional mistakes that might have gone unpunished. Other clubs notice this too though, and you can't keep gift wrapping them the opportunity to take advantage of it.

...not only that, when he does get up the pitch he finds it a huge strain to get back in position to defend a counter attack. How often have we seen that with him?

Positionally he is completely clueless. A mess. THAT is what all managers see....even Gerrard kept him on the bench in the SPL for the most part.

Utterly dreadful idea to bring him here. The scouting at this club can be hopeless at times.

….i don’t think that’s the lack of physicality, Dave, the lad just doesn’t have the wherewithal to play so he becomes high risk.

Just look at the goal we conceded to Ipswich (I think) at home last season. He goes blindly marauding up the right, clashed with an opponent and is left on the floor, can’t recover and leaving them to exploit the space he’d left and equalise. He’s probably a bright young man but he plays football like he’s a bit daft.

He’ll only play when there’s nobody else available, that’s the reality and nobody is to blame.

I think it's both, tbh. I think people see his frame and build and are lulled into thinking he's athletic. He's not. He's the most pedestrian 23 year old you'll see in the PL. His lack of stamina is shocking. Some players just dont have an engine - even in the PL- but can get away with it with a bit of nous and dose their effort accordingly...but he doesn't possess that commodity either.

The only way we get shut of him is on a free.

Yup, I think the debate is over. He has no future at Everton. He will only get the standard Everton one year contract extension. That apparently is the going rate for benchwarmers:)

….i did watch bits of the Scotland game, mainly to keep an eye on him. Japan got in good positions but were generally wasteful and a bit lightweight. On one occasion, they got in down their right with only the keeper to beat and I noticed Patterson was the one who actually got back on the goal line.

He wasn’t needed and I thought that was good but he’s just a bit of a loose cannon.

When people are discussing Patterson using a number of key metrics one would always expect a defender to be measured by such as fitness, availability, application, physicality, ability, attacking play, defensive position etc, it's really strange to see religion keep being referenced without any further context or evidence that it's a factor in someone's opinion of the player.

But I guess it's good for "likes" and popularity among strangers does seem to be quite important to a section of our online fanbase.

If that shot would have been on target rather than blocked Patterson would found a way to conjure up an OG.
