Did you think Patterson couldnt defend when we had a run of clean sheets with him in the team? Or when the stats showed he was our best RB?

Couldnt Mykolenko defend last season?

Interesting...

What about last season when Patterson started every game (after finishing the previous season with 4 starts from the last 5 games) before being dropped for our first win of the season? Or when he came back in to the side for the 3 consecutive defeats culminating in the 3-0 defeat at Wolves?

Mykolenko is a better defender, but has no end product and lacks recovery pace. I've yet to see much end product from Patterson.

Tom Davies all over again, this.
Even for old Nat...

That's a harsh comparison, mate... 🤦‍♂️

It happens. Even good/great managers make the wrong call on players sometimes, so guess it's to only be expected that fans will be wrong way, way more than any competent manager.

@MikeH72 used to get annoyed with Marco Silva for not playing Tom Davies. Mike was a big supporter of Silva too. Not having a go at Mike for getting it wrong with Tom btw, I liked him too, and much later than the Silva era, I'm just pointing out one example of youngsters not always developing in to what we think they might.

Yep. Can't argue with that.

I understand the points people are making re 'we've got to look to the future' when discussing whether Nathan should start over the likes of Young, but I just don't agree with them.

The only point I could maybe get behind is possibly moving Young to left back and sticking someone else in at right back simply because of how woefully bad Mykolenko has been all season. He's been a disgrace.

But if you're asking me who should start at right back out of Young and Patterson I'm going Young all day long, to be fair to him he's done really well so far this season since he came back from his suspension that he picked up against Brighton. There's been much bigger problems across the pitch this season than Ashley's performances - which speaks volumes of just how awful we are as a club at footy.

Mate, I have seen him play for us. I don’t know if you have, but I have seen him out of position nearly all the time. I’ve seen him fail at winning a header against Arsenal leading to a goal. I’ve seen him sell a goal against Arsenal leading Brighton. Simply put, he isn’t good enough. Not premier league quality at all and never ever will be.
Alright Sean, didn’t know you were on the forum pal.

Give patto a slap for me will yer.

Was that when he was alongside the defensive colossus Michael Keane who was also dropped before our first win? Bloody Patterson - how dare he cross the halfway line and attempt to cross a football onto a striker, disgusting.

Were two of those defeats before the wolves capitulation against spurs and Man City, who we have a shocking record against?

All bloody pattersons fault how bad this club is, I tell ya!

So we're adding "put a good cross in once" to his list of notable achievements at the club now? Had a good game in the Derby once and had Mitoma in his pocket v Brighton once. What a three years it's been.

Oh and who were those defeats against?

Who else was alongside him in defence and what goals was he directly responsinle for?

Not sure what end product you're going to see when he is dropped when playing well.

Young is getting a lot of praise but is no one seeing how he is exposed most games? Mykolenko is having a dreadful season but Young isnt much better.

Been injured for the majority of his time here like but aye crack on :coffee:

Caught in 2 minds here, he hasn't played for ages, weary of dropping him in at the deep end right away. But honestly if he's fit, start him.
