I'm not intimate to their situations. Maybe some don't have families? Maybe given the nature of the crossing, they chose to do it themselves until they were settled and then called for their families who could travel in safer circumstances? I've no idea.

You're very wrong, it's extremists vs everyone; an extremists is some who utilises violence. You are categorising all together, so all the men and women who want democracy and a less stringent Islamic society are being placed in the same category as people who want to impose a caliphate.

And I'm not playing down anything, I'm aware it's a global issue, as Brazil is finding out now. But I take concern with terminology being used and grouping of people with nothing to back up those statements.
