I could ask him his thoughts on sharia law, Turkey's recent developments, if religion should be a choice, apostacy, his sister eloping with a non-believer, if we should grant homosexuals equal rights, whether forcing sex with his wife is acceptable, if women should have the freedom to go out get drunk and pull, if he views any criticism of his religion as aggressive heresy and thus whether Theo Van Gogh deserved a knife in his back.

A kind of litmus test, if you will.

The thing is, you could equally ask Christians about evolution, gay marriage, being 'healed' by Jesus, invading Iraq, child abuse and the various other dodgy things undertaken by members of the Christian faith. Is it right to tar all Christians with that brush because certain sections have (to us) peculiar views?

I dare say if you went around pestering all Christians on that basis you'd be regarded as a bit of a menace, so why is it any different for Muslims?

They might be oddballs....But they aren't murderous oddballs, are they?

give it a rest lad

The history of Ireland would appear to suggest otherwise. There have been no shortage of conflicts inspired by religion down the years. I'm agnostic so have no real support for any of them, but lets at least try and be balanced about it.

Expand on 'History of Ireland' please?

Let's take your points step-by-step, considering say the last 20 years:

"evolution" - have Christians' views on evolution physically hurt people? Are people free to criticise and mock said views without fear of violent reprisals?

"gay marriage" - have Christian nations largely voted in favour of legalising gay marriage?

"invading Iraq" - what has this to do with Christianity? It wasn't a holy war: it was an invasion based on arms deals, oil resources and regime changes. This is well known.

"child abuse" - can we openly talk about these crimes? Can we allow victims freedom to talk about them and can we investigate them without fear?

the answer to these questions is obvious, and thereby lie the answer to your main question: why is it any different for Muslims?

The first step to the Islamic Age of Enlightenment is for everyone to be able to discuss, criticise and mock freely, however fair or unfair some of those criticisms may be. For the deeper message isn't what the critic says, it's how the slighted respond.

Really? Ok, yes, religion had nothing to do with what went on there.

Never said it didn't.

I did, however, ask for an expansion. As the tone of your answer infers sectarian violence; I will answer by saying that I don't remember the IRA or UDF bombing or indiscriminately murdering in Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, Peking etc.

Their dispute was kept local, islam's is global.
