Macedonia existed since Roman times as a region, then it was a Greek region before Bulgaria fought a lot of wars with Greece, took it over for a long time (during the times when we were an empire twice), and when we got freed from the Ottoman empire, we helped them by co-organising their uprisings, which then resulted in them becoming a separate country.
After the two Balkan wars Serbia took over that baby-country (not really formed properly yet, but in existence to an extent nonetheless) and, together with Greeks tried to remove any connection to Bulgaria, by burning down our churches and schools by the hundreds throughout the whole country. Then the first World War came and, seeing as we weren't on the right side at the time, gave Macedonia to the newly formed coalition/Kingdom of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, and the same anti-Bulgarian laws came in, this time also expelling any clergymen and teachers, changed their alphabet to yours (which is essentially the same, but using Germanic letters instead of our Slavic ones), and burned any books and information you could find about Bulgarians ever being there, despite the Macedonians carrying Bulgarian names for the most part at the time.
Then the Serbian government pursued total Serbianisation of the region, so to say, by sending an army of about 50000 Serbian soldiers in Macedonia, as well as colonising a lot of families there too.
After the formation of Yugoslavia, Macedonians still wanted a free country, and lo-and-behold, Bulgarians helped them again with the organisation of revolutionary groups.
Results of all those banishments and colonisation attempts are largely unsuccessful and you can see that just by listening to their national folklore, which is, oddly enough, mostly songs in Bulgarian, just like ours. Only thing they kept is the sense of national pride (which many on here know my opinion of), and the Serbianised alphabet.
This is not my opinion, these are facts based on history.
Anyway, we're going madly offtopic here. Sorry Moolz.
