In response to your other point, the principle remains that it is possible to look at players attributes and determine whether he is a better player than another. if you followed you're own criteria for judging a player then you would need to say that you need to see Besic play more in order to determine who is the better player because at the moment you don't have enough evidence to make a judgement. Basically if you prefer McCarthy that's fine but don't pretend this is based on evidence. Besic dominated the midfield in games against Tottenham and City. McCarthy typically hides in his shell against quality opposition and just crabs it side ways and backwards.
The major difference between the two is that Besic looks to impose himself on a game. This means that he often looks like he offers more. The problem is that most of us don't know enough about football to know whether that's because he's better or if it's just a stylistic difference.
