Be very interested to see what happens when McCarthy is fit again.

Rest Barry and rotate the 3. Something tells me McCarthy is still awhile off starting and playing a high quality 90 though; hips/groins are funny funny things.

Be interesting to see what happens against Swansea now Cleverley is fit.

I'm a Cleverley fan, but he is half the central midfielder Besic is! Barry needs to play alongside a defensive midfielder

"Everton will look to sign Muhamed Besic on an improved contract earlier than planned after the Bosnian continued to impress in an Everton shirt on his return from injury.

Besic limped off the pitch early in Everton’s win over Chelsea in September, and has only just returned to first team action, but has impressed so much that Everton boss Roberto Martinez wants to bring forward contract talks.

The Daily Mail claims that Besic was due to sit down in the summer to discuss an improved contract, but that Everton now want to sit down with the combative midfielder much sooner.

Besic signed for Everton on a four year deal in the summer of 2014 but found his experiences limited in his first term, and cut short by injuries up until earlier this month.

He has made several impressive appearances since the new year, however, with the stand out one being his return to the first team againstManchester City in the Capital One Cup semi final where he bossed the midfield against some of the most expensive players in the league."

Out of curiousity, what are your thoughts on Mccarthy starting over Besic now he seems 100% fit to play? knowing Besic he wouldnt mind at all and say somethin along the line of: "its the gaffers decision ill keep doing my best" how do the fans see this as mccarthy is a decent player himself

Hi mate, welcome to GOT!

I am a firm advocate of consistent partnerships and I think Barry/McCarthy as a pair is a tremendous one.

However.

Besic has been very, very good. His positional play has improved 10-fold since last season. My two biggest criticisms of him before this season were:

His negativity in the final third, especially against retreated defences.
His atrocious positional play. Some blues loved the fact he was busting a gut, running round everywhere. The reason he was doing this in my opinion was that he was always in the wrong place. He was reactive, as apposed to Barry who is extremely proactive which is why he picks up alot of second balls.

This season he has obviously worked on these things, and has said so on the everton website in an interview I think. His positional play is much, much better which means he can now play with that intensity for the entire game when we dont have the ball. He then, when obtaining it, has the energy to bring it out with the same intensity. His negativity seems a thing of the pass, showcased by a disguised reverse pass to Mirrallas last weekend after turning the Chelsea opponent inside/out in the centre circle.

Back to your original question as i'm waffling - McCarthy is a brilliant player but it's Besic's place to lose now. Those two competing alongside Barry is a great headache for the manager. I'd like to see the three of them played at times too.

I am not a believer that a Besic/McCarthy partnership is the way forward, however. But that's just me.

Hello mate and welcome. I'd drop Besic to the bench and put McCarthy back in as he's a better player.

Looking forward to seeing more of Besic next season though, he could develop int a very useful squad player.

It's more than likely that Besic will ask to be dropped once McCarthy is fit....he probably say something like "Hey Coco, drop me, James is fit"

Besic should keep his place alongside Barry IMO

Based on how they have playing in recent times, I would have Besic ahead of mc Carthy.

Besic seems to have really progressed and is now a delight to watch plus he links well with Barkley.

My question is whether mc Carthy could take over from Barry as the midfield holder at some point in the future.

I know you're twenty something but come on reserve your flippancy for the manager and not for the players.
