Do wonder if it would be better turning McCarthy into that long-term sitting player - he's got good positional sense, is often directing players when we're defending, can win a ball and play the simple pass to get things started again. Whereas Besic seems to be thriving on freedom to make runs, dribble, etc.

James passing and positional play aren't good enough for barry role imo

Might get pelted for this but for me, I think we've looked marginally better with Besic/Barry than McCarthy/Barry. McCarthy works harder but Besic just oozes a special, unique quality about him. Be interested to see the two of them play together and rest Barry for a change.
