Muhamed Besic

I'm curious to see Besic in meaningful action as well, but honest question:

Given the team's continuing struggles to defend set pieces, why is everyone clambering for the individual who is presumably our most foul-prone player to be subbed on to see out a close game?

Fair point. Also, I wonder whether Martinez was guided by a certain kind of intangible - loyalty to players. IMO, we needed fresh legs in central defensive midfield...cue Besic (or Gibson). But Martinez almost never takes off Barry or McCarthy (except for when chasing games), so perhaps there's a bit of pride and face involved with the 'senior' players. No idea how important this kind of thing is (no one wants to be subbed, etc), but it did seem strange that we didn't get fresh legs in the deeper areas, but only out on the flanks....

I wonder if RM is grooming Besic to be able to play up front in Osman's spot. Preseason he looked really good on the ball in tight places. His vision seemed to be pretty good as well. One of the big problems against Arsenal was our poor possession late in the game, Osman was just okay in my opinion and towards the end of the game he disappeared. He also did a poor job tracking back on the first goal, something I think Besic would do better. Obviously it would depend on how well Besic takes to the creative role but down the line I think Besic in the CAM has the potential to give RM a dimension that Everton doesn't have right now.

Problem was mate everyone of the team was tired. You could of argued for the sub of any of the players as they we all goosed!!

We only had 2 subs because of pienaar's injury so the 2 that needed subbing the most was deemed as mirallas & Lukaku which is totally understandable.

There is the argument that bringing besic on for his PL baptasim against a arsenal team really pushing on would of been a risky choice. But RM doesn't strike me that way inclined and I'd say it was just simply he had to get mirallas & lukaku off to avoid the risk of injury, and that therefore chose his subs for him.

Besic is not an attacking midfielder. A bit of good ball control in a pre season friendly doesn't make him one.
I agree he's not a traditional CAM and isn't likely to ever be but as age brings Osman down it'd be nice to have another option especially with most of the other in-house options looking brittle. Ideally Everton would bring in another option via transfer market but if it doesn't happen we'll have to go with what we got.

RM has talked a lot about players giving the side dimensions it wouldn't otherwise have. A CAM playing in front of Barry/McCarthy who is possession and distribution oriented while also being strong at tracking back and marking (more useful than Osman in the air as well, I'd wager, another weakness to this point) is definitely a different flavor for the CAM role. If Besic was ready for it, I think we'd have seen it Saturday. And yet, unless we get another option in, it wouldn't surprise me if we see it later in the season when we're trying to hold a lead.

Still can't understand the view that Besic needs easing in. We would have only been looking for him to play the last 20 minutes on Saturday - how much better easing in do you want? The idea that it was a risk in case he got sent off is absolutely laughable. If that's the concern then he's never going to play! Isn't he just as likely to get sent off in an EL or League cup game? And as for him needing to take a look at PL games first before being put in, well he didn't need to get a feel for World Cup games - he was plunged in straightaway, and I didn't notice him struggle to come to terms with it!

No, the truth is RM ballsed up by not strengthening our right side as the game wore on. No surprise the two goals came from that side.

If there is a defence for Roberto on this occasion it's that he tried to strengthen the defence for the last 10 minutes at Leicester -- and we promptly conceded! Perhaps that was on his mind.

Pienaar has been ruled out vs Chelsea. I'm hoping Besic is going to be the man to replace him!

4-3-3 with a midfield of:

Besic - Barry - McCarthy

Fabregas wouldn't get a kick!

Twi9ce in a row RM has got it wrong tactically during the game, you wouldn't be able to say that last season. This game is now the difference between a poor start and a decent one

I definitely want to see Besic given a go next week. Whole team need freshening up, the Arsenal game shows that that XI still isn't a 100%.

Drop Barry and start Besic, we need someone to give Fabregas a hard time in the middle of the park all game.
