I don't subscribe to the notion that

I tend to think it would have been better if he'd have come out and said exactly how it was: it was 'only' a friendly, a testimonial for a loyal, 12-year servant of the club, around which a legend has been forged due to him never having scored.
Moyes could have painted it exactly how it was - a celebration, good natured and with no harm done.
Any potential flames would have been dampened down. The authorities would have been put right (as if they needed to) and would be free to concentrate on more pressing matters.
The fact that he's alluded to it being "disappointing" pretty much infers that it was a mischievous act that warrants a good look.
