Moyes 'The ungrateful irritant'

I don't know if it's just me but I always felt the last few years of Moyes' tenure had a strained relationship with fans even in good moments. His first few years he was always so complimentary of our support and the effect it would have on the team, how it was what kept this club going etc. I always think back to that villa game in 06/07 maybe?? It was that sickener when young went up the other end to make it 3-2 in last minute. I dont remember the exact details but at 2-1 down he seemed to be getting grief over something then lescott equalised and he threw his coat off in this volatile action to the fans which at the time seemed passionate and vilified till seconds later...

I think these moments of frustration got more and more as the years went by and the club stagnated along with our play a lot of the time and I always felt the crowd reactions got under his skin a wee bit. If you look at his words from the last few years he speaks of his enormous respect for the players foremost, the chairman second and always mentions us the fans last. Maybe I'm just on one here but I genuinely believe over time he grew distant from us and his love/respect towards the club stemmed from the players and bill. I think this is why he's spoken with some disregard at times, because ultimately it doesnt wind up the players (they're not arsed) nor does it wind up his bezzie, bill. It hurts us and quite frankly I dont think he's that bothered.

I think what would get him more tomorrow would be to see a team of 'his players' turn up and outplay him for their new manager. I doubt very much whatever reception we give him means a jot to him.

It was because he brought Van De Meyde on that night against Villa mate, remember it well.

Anyone remember the game against Bolton - we lost 2-0 at their place???... I hated him in that game. We had just beaten Blackpool 5-3 - (Moyes focussing on trying to stop Charlie Adam and really the 5-3 flattered us)

He had a sulk as if to say "its the players, not me" - as if we had played like Barcelona the previous week... the petulant sod threw on Baxter when we had nothing to gain as if to say "well this is what you want to see isn't it? Baxter get a chance...." He did the same with Barkley, threw him in when he expected him to not be able to make a difference - set them up for a fall so he could stick with his osman, neville, heitinga midfield...

I don't know what his motives were, but he seemed to do that a few times.

When I first read about Moyes' recent comments, I was as angry as some of the others on here, mainly because the comments were a slight against everything Martinez has done since he came in. But then again, Moyes may view Martinez's comments as dismissive of Moyes' accomplishments during his tenure. Martinez has said he wants to change the mentality towards facing top clubs at Everton, well lets not forget Moyes' incredible record against Manchester City who I would consider to be a top club. Sure we would hold on to leads against them, but at times in those games we played some great football and that shouldn't be overlooked.

I think the insults are going both ways, we're just more inclined to see Martinez's comments as realism, in part because now he's on our side. The fact is Martinez hasn't even been in charge for a full season and many managers look great to begin with, but get found out later on. I'm very happy with the football we're playing under Martinez, but we shouldn't forget what Moyes did to get us there, and we should recognize that in this type of situation, it's difficult for any sort of remarks about the predecessor/successor not to sound at least a little disparaging.

But hey, it's matchday! Time to let the players on the pitch do the talking

Posted this on another forum in response to a Manc lad I know asking why the worm had turned as far as our opinion of Moyes is concerned. Thought it might be worth posting it here in the hope of an Amen or two.

Finally - His recent comments, suggesting that he should be taking the credit for Everton's good start...

"Everton fans see a direction that their team is going in but they need to remember I signed a lot of them"

"But to be fair to him Roberto is doing a really good job keeping things going at Everton"

"I told Roberto that I left such an organised team behind that they could play without a manager and still win"

If continuing success is so easy, then perhaps Moyes could explain why he took over the Champions and currently finds himself in 8th place?

In summary, he's thrown away the respect I and most Evertonians had for him. I always used to have a soft spot, in a way, for United. Perhaps it was an anti-Liverpool solidarity thing or something. Dunno, but whilst Moyes is there it's completely gone. I wish nothing but failure for him.

Great post this. I particularly like the bit in bold. Any half decent media man would quiz him on that in his next interview. I would love to see his comeback for why they are only in 8th place.

Indeed.

At this point last season United were top - which is where they stayed until May.

Over to you Davie......

Be absolutely brilliant if Roberto does what Moyes couldnt in 11yrs after just 6 months in charge. Then we'll truly know that it was him and not the players. Small time mentality was brought to Everton by David Moyes.

just dont do anything it will hurt his ego, more if people just get on with supporting the team , its not just now all his interviews centre around himself it was the same when he was here, he did a decent job left so thats it as far as im botherd about him, if he gets stick he will be thinking look there going mad because i left, moyes only gives a toss about himself , the united fans arnt daft they will soon see him for what he is.

Does anyone think that Moyes could face some serious stick and booing from his own fans if we (hopefully) give United a footballing lesson and get a comfortable win??? I hope so... United fans are glancing enviously at the football we are playing with a new manager and wondering just what they have been saddled with - rightly so.

Not only will we get some payback for his disrespect, but also earn the respect that we deserve for being the club we are, not some "happy to be top half" team that he has made out we should be content with... come on blue boys - lets get right at these!!!!

I resent the fact this feller gets any plaudits. He did an ok job. That's it.

I see he's currently ramping up his own importance in the history of 'the stepping stone club':

"The Premier League has been going for just over 20 years and in the first half of that period Everton had a top-10 finish maybe once. In the second half we finished in the top 10 on a regular basis."

He conveniently fails to mention in the first half of that period we actually won something under a manager who had the courage to make big decisions. He could have been here another 11 years and we'd have won nothing.

That's the first time I've ever seen him refer to us as "we".

There was something genuine about Joe Royle. Not just because he is a massive blue and managing us was his dream, you just believed in the guy and what he was trying to do. The same with Martinez. He is a very open and genuine guy and just inspires you. He's been at the club for 6 months and he is already one of us. I never got that feeling with Moyes. Sure he did well, very well at times, but he was always distant...always angry...never really that inspirational. And sending a weakened team out in a derby game was unforgivable

Both come across as well mannered and reserved. But both have shown they've got a winning streak and bit of steel, or backbone whatever, when it's needed. Incidentally that's exactly how I see ourselves as a club.

I loved Joe Royle. He never believed anyone was bigger than us.

I beg to differ. Martinez has a history barring Wigan of making clubs develop a sustainable and prosperous future.

e.g. Swansea

Wigan he won a trophy. Despite all his best players being poached. And lets face it. Never having a huge fan base actual or potential.

Think that says something.

Martinez was the foundation of Swansea being the club they are now.

Martinez won't be found out. The foundations (youth. Training) plus size of the club are all in his favour.

It must be like being in Disney land for him. Football wise.

Only thing missing is a massive transfer budget. But he will still have more than Wigan.

Right now there is an article about our EX and BK on Sky Sports Football. I was furious with the pack of lies from our EX unfortunately I do not know how to do link. Perhaps someone out there can do it.
