Saw them at the Manchester Apollo 2003 - a great night.
It seem to remember it was a wet October night - got there late and missed the support.I've seen them 3 times there, was probably at it.
The go team might have been the support act, another quality band
A.R. Kane.
"Up Home" still sounds like nothing before or since, 32 years on. One of the most innovative and original records I've ever heard. Same guys who made "Pump Up the Volume" as M/A/R/R/S, I think, weirdly.
Cocteau Twins are a good shout, @magicjuan . Far more influential than they get credit for.
The House of Love:
Terry Bickers' guitar playing was what made this band truly ace. He should be rated up there with Johnny Marr, John Squire, Nick McCabe, Bernard Butler etc. and probably would be if he hadn't been so, erm, "eccentric" back in the day. Guy Chadwick was a more than decent songwriter, too.
And I'm always gonna say Spacemen 3, 'cos they're my favourite band.
Tripping Daisy.
Tim DeLaughter is known more for the Polyphonic Spree who are also massively underrated but at least people are vaguely aware of them unlike Tripping Daisy.
These are my two favourites (Hard to choose) of theirs anyway
I know Jump Into the Fire is a Harry Nilsson cover.
Others I enjoy who are not nearly as well known as they should/could be:
Geneva
Whale
Jellyfish
The best Tripping Daisy album (Jesus Hits...) is brill - Especially the 1-2 hit of Waited A Light Year and Sonic Bloom
Just remembered who the most underrated band actually is : The Posies
Incredible songwriters. I heard Any Other Way randomly at a store about a month ago. It's such a good song. Seen them a few times.
Saw them at the Deaf Institute last year for the 30th(!) anniversary tour - Fantastic band
