A.R. Kane.

"Up Home" still sounds like nothing before or since, 32 years on. One of the most innovative and original records I've ever heard. Same guys who made "Pump Up the Volume" as M/A/R/R/S, I think, weirdly.

Cocteau Twins are a good shout, @magicjuan . Far more influential than they get credit for.

The House of Love:

Terry Bickers' guitar playing was what made this band truly ace. He should be rated up there with Johnny Marr, John Squire, Nick McCabe, Bernard Butler etc. and probably would be if he hadn't been so, erm, "eccentric" back in the day. Guy Chadwick was a more than decent songwriter, too.

And I'm always gonna say Spacemen 3, 'cos they're my favourite band.

Spiritualised, the band that came from the wreckage of Spacemen 3, is one of my favourite bands, and I feel, very underrated.

Probably, the first three albums were pretty much peerless. Went downhill a bit after that, although still better than most. The last one was a nice surprise though, best record he'd done since Let It Come Down.
Yeah, always more bad than good on every album, but they come along so rarely, meaning you only get three or four really good Spiritualized songs every five years or so! ‘And Nothing Hurt’ is fantastic - easily amongst his best work.

Aye. Saw a couple of guys touring a few years ago who do a tribute show to nick drake. Played his music and talked about his life. Was excellent. Your man Elliot Smith reminds me of him at times.

He was obviously massively influenced by Drake. At the same time he was a huge Beatles fan. A song like Baby Brittain (a song about an alcoholic) with the positive pop sensibilities of Lennon was so obvious where the influence came from. Smith could have written Imagine but it would have been about heroin addiction.

AC/DC. Not in doubt.
Useless trivia time. The end of the Perth festival is next weekend and they are shutting down a major highway in Perth for the day to have an AC/DC festival. The festival is called highway to hell and it is the road that the song was written about, leading from the river into fremantle. Should be good fun, I live one street back so will no doubt pop down to have a gander.

Felt

10 albums in 10 years or so, most on Creation. They didn't get big because Peel didn't like the name of their debut, Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty, so he never played them.

Lawrence, the singer, who is one of the most underrated frontmen ever for many reasons wrong a letter to Peel asking why and never got a response.

And here is is talking about it. Now out of a job and on benefits :(

He is still going though

Refused.

Created an album in the late 90's that still sounds like its from the future all while hardcore bands had to stick to a specific formula and were berated when stepping outside of it.

It's pretty much a perfect album - unfortunately it was like lightning in a bottle and they've struggled to recreate that same buzz since
