The Wildhearts. A few years ago Classic Rock mag seemed to have a crusade to make everyone believe we lived in a world where The Wildhearts, and their frontman 'Ginger From The Wildhearts' (as he is always referred to as nobody knows who he is otherwise) were in fact the biggest band of the preceding ten years and much missed rock legends after their split..

In reality hardly anyone had ever heard of them, which is unsurprising as they were utter piffle

They also used to have Aerosmith on the cover every other issue. They're a load of old pony as well.
Not my cup of tea at all, don't own any of their records, but The Wildhearts are one of the best live acts I've ever seen.

I don't like punk music, i dont get it. I understand the movement behind it but the Sex Pistols music is genuinely awful. But im sure they were great live when you could experience the violence and phlegm.

The only two genres of music I've never been able to enjoy are Punk and Jungle.
You have to put Punk and the sex pistols into context. It was 1976 and being a young person in any inner city area was pretty crap. The music scene was stale and the youth were restless. To tap it all off, lads dressed like the Bay City Rollers we’re considered cool!!!

Then this happened and OMG it was if someone just turned on the lights. If anything it inspired so many young people to take up an instrument, form bands and generally start to have a great time.

Some lids like Crass took Anarchy to different level and went off on one about bringing down the government but that’s another story

I appreciate that it may have been a seismic moment for music and culture and it's influences still seen today.

I just don't like the music that I've heard. If the Sex Pistols were playing in a pub I'd probably walk out. And i watch a lot of live music of dubious quality and i don't think I've ever abandoned a gig before. It's simply dreadful.

Yup musically they were poor. But what came after and because of them showed them for what they truly were and that was a huge catalyst for change.

Really can’t understand bands who change direction from what made them “successful” and “huge”, because they’ve “made it” and want to effectively showcase how “different” they are.

With that in mind, most Overrated bands of the last 25 years are anything by Radiohead since 2001, and anything by muse after 2010.

Absolute drivel and still charging £80 a ticket.

I thought In Rainbows was their best album, and How To Disappear Completely their best song tbh.

Yeah i do appreciate that and as a band they were a lot more than their music. I'm simply going subjectively based on my personal tastes. I know people who still love their music who were born a long time after the punk era so it must have something for them. It's just not for me.

Im the opposite to most people in that I think Radiohead’s post OK computer stuff is some of their best work, they became way more interesting when they ditched the guitars for synths/sampler and went more experimental.

Bands should record and put out what they want to put out. I'd argue that if a band continued to put out the same thing that got them to where they where just because it did exactly that, then it would actually be disingenuous. Even if the changes in direction can be absolute gash, see Green Day for example.

I'll be honest i haven't listened to a lot of the clash, just a handful of the famous ones. They sounded like they had a few different influences and styles over what i associate (rightly or wrongly) as the punk sound i dislike. Just take their 2 biggest mainstream hits, probably London calling and Rock the casbah. That isn't how i think of punk music. I'm not a musician, i just know that every time i have been to a punk nignt at a club or a cd was put on i never enjoyed it. One of mates went through a punk stage so i endured it as infrequently as possible.

The clash transcend punk without a doubt. First two albums fit that genre but when you get to London Calling the influences and genres are so diverse that it’s simply no longer punk.

I’m a bit biased as they are one of my all time favourites but I don’t think anyone can deny the quality of their songwriting and how they always tried to expand their own musical horizons.

Thanks mate I'll give them a listen. I don't really like putting a blanket over a genre and dismissing it so if i can find some stuff i like that will make me happy.

I could never get into jazz for years, just couldn't get it. Then i started hanging out at a jazz pub in bristol and couldn't get enough of it. Maybe I'll make a punk yet ha.

Garbage ripped off Train in vain for the drum track to Stupid Girl. Inspired choice.

That's clearly not true - I'm no massive Wildhearts fan - but 'Earth Vs the Wildhearts' is still a blast

This Radiohead take makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit TBH

I can understand how TKOL isn’t someone’s cup of tea, but you’re lumping In Rainbows in with that?
