Self Service Checkout machines. Tried to use one today and no way was it going to accept my £10 note...tried straightening it , bending it....to no success.
Had to use all my change and then had to by something else at the counter , so i had change for car parking.

they are boss, the best way to shop with the least hassle from a gang of old fossils clogging up the aisles

Something usually goes inexplicably wrong when I use them. A demotivated staff member has to shuffle over and sort it out.
It's still better than queuing and having to actually engage with someone.

Can only agree with this. At the checkout, the worst ones (where I live at least) are the old biddies who take forever to pack their bags / put the stuff in their trolleys, and then act all surprised when they are told they need to actually pay for it and so only then begin to look for their purses, inevitably going on to firstly try and pay with loads of loose change (counting it out penny by penny) before realising they don't have enough change and pull out either some notes or their bank card, only to forget their PIN and have to choose an alternative method of payment instead. Half way through the whole thing they will likely also remember they have a clubcard or something and interrupt the entire process before starting again.

Unfortunately where I live there is only, as far as I know, one supermarket in the entire city that has self checkouts, and that's at the central station and is always packed out.

Why would anybody feel the need to walk either up or down an escalator ? It's a moving staircase..... stop rushing around...take the extra 30 seconds to stop...have a breath and take in your surroundings. .. life would become so less stressful
