2025/26 Michael Vincent Keane

Haha, yeah, over 27 games - it's not about Everton's defenders, no chance we give them any credit - it's all about good luck with other teams poor finishing. You don't say that if this season we had Branthwaite and O'Brien centre half all season.

You're proving my point wonderfully here.
Over enough games that it could have made a big difference to our points total today.

Only 1st Arsenal, 2nd Man City and 3rd Aston Villa have conceded less than Everton.

Jordan Pickford has 9 clean sheets, 33.3% of games.

Michael Keane is far from the problem this season.

Considering he's been our best centre half this season, the contract renewal proved a sensible decision.

Now we have Branthwaite back, and O'Brien - they should be centre half and Michael Keane, a squad player.

That's down to the manager.

The problem this season - again - is a lack of goals. We've scored less after 27 games than we did under Dyche's full season. But here we are, people digging out Michael Keane. It's always his fault - just like when everyone said he was the main reason we were terrible, and then he never played 1 single minute in the season we were 19th with our lowest ever points total going into February.

Proverbial scapegoat - to many, it's always his fault.
Good post.
They're gutted he's had a decent season.
Can't wait to blame him for something/anything.
Imagine not wanting your own players to do well.

It is his fault though...

I thought the players gave it a really good go, it was great to see a bit more atmosphere and I think it would really have ignited if we’d forced one, but we never really looked like scoring did we?

We so clearly set up to try and stop the opposition playing each week, but that tends to stop us playing too. Like Dyche, Moyes seems to believe in organisation for the defence and freedom for the attack, but in reality that just means no patterns of play, no moving the opposition around, just lots of crosses and the creation of a reasonable number of very low quality chances.

There’s no problem having an old school manager - it definitely has its benefits - but he should constantly be showing his ambition and openness to change by hiring the best young coaches out there. This is what Alex Ferguson did. It’s what the early Moyes did when he brought in Irvine who he hardly knew. The Moyes of today seems to have reverted to an employ-your-mates worldview through, closing himself off from the future. It’s a shame for him and it’s a shame for us, but there’s still a lot to be positive about in terms of the way this young squad is evolving.

Imagine if we hadn’t given him a new deal - we’d have had to go out and sign another centre-half.
  • Everton: 16 teams have scored more goals than us.
  • Everton: only 3 teams have conceded fewer.
Keane has chipped in with 3 goals himself. The only players with more are Barry, Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall (all on 5). No other defender in the squad has scored.

Even last night, he produced our best effort on goal out of nothing.

Yet somehow, we’re back on his case again.

I get people thinking we need better, but to pipe up about his contract renewal/say we should have let him go for free now... well, I'd like to say it's baffling but it's very much inline with the usual.

Is that you Keggers?

I totally agree that he ain’t picking himself, but I don’t think it’s scapegoating to say Keane epitomises everything that is wrong with Everton - failure and poor performance praised and rewarded.

He’s also by no means the only player who’s the issue either, but sadly, Keane makes others around him perform worse than they are capable of - it’s been demonstrated over the many years he’s been here.

I’m not gutted at all that he’s had a so called “decent” season, even with his red card and calamity defending in many games - he’s just not good enough, and shouldn’t have been offered a new deal or keep getting selected - end of.

His 3 goals are irrelevant when his distinct lack of pace and agility means we are so vulnerable to the counter at home. We can only afford to have ONE of Keane and Tarks playing, and Tarks brings more to the table than Keane with tackling/blocking/aggression.
I have one direct Yes/No question for you:

If Branthwaite was left CB last night, would that goal have been scored?

They're not, especially in a team which isn't scoring enough goals.

See Tarkowski's pace yesterday for their goal? Yikes.

i think most Everton fans would say Keane has been the better of the two this season.

A better question to pose in the David Moyes thread, or indeed, the James Tarkowski one. It was Tarkowski who was caught.

Not sure why the anger is being directed to Keane, it was an incredible pass and he managed to stay goal side of his man, his partner go exposed for pace and was possibly over committed. Personally I think its just a good goal, the only thing I would add is that if a manger selects a CB partnership with no recovery pace these goals are more likely

Keane isn't the problem.

The problem is the manager picking players out of position.

That team last night was so unbalanced and setup simply to keep things tight.
