Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Hi guys. I hate secrets but I've been keeping one and I feel it's time to share with you all because you share your ups and downs, good times and bad times. I have told a couple of people but I wasn't ready to open it to the wider world. However I feel I can now. A few weeks ago our son had a growth removed from his ankle that looked like an infected bite. Unfortunately it has turned out to be a malignant melanoma. He now needs a further, bigger operation on his foot to dig out any remaining cancerous cells. He also had a full body scan. The results were good but not as good as they could have been. His liver, lungs and brain are clear but one of his lymph nodes was enlarged so that could mean it has spread to there. Or it could be nothing. He now has to have a biopsy on that to find out. As you can imagine we are so upset, even though the prognosis is generally good and I am confident that he will be OK. It's just not something you expect to have to deal with when it's your kids. I have to say 2024 has been a pretty sh*t (sorry Pete) year so far.
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the biopsy results are good.

Not been a great day today. Tired and frustrated, my wife is doing ok but it gets to you. All I can do is try to crack a joke and absorb the laughing of those around me to keep going. I was reading an article about millennials moaning about not getting their ‘due’ inheritance because they were having to sell their parents house/flat to pay for care homes. As someone who had a house specifically built to look after my mother as well as my family, I couldn’t get my head around why they wouldn’t sell their parents homes and build a purpose built annex on their own home and look after them. Different times I suppose……
Oh Pete, sorry to hear this. You are doing an amazing job with your wife but it must be exhausting. Here's a rubbish joke that I hope will make you laugh

I said to the baker 'How come all your cakes are £2 except that one which is £3?'
He said 'That's madeira cake'!

Going to a quiz tonight with the neighbour. It's sort of a Round Table event. Think I'm surplus to requirement numbers wise but I'm happy to just sit by the bar during the quiz if they're strict about it. I've spoken to him a couple of times but this is the first time we've been out since the split. I'll leave it up to him if he wants to talk about it.

Bit harsh that gents. I’m sure in many cases the children are not equipped professionally to care for their parents and nor are they secure enough financially to leave their employment to do so.
My friend's Mum Dies last May, she was 99. He is an only child and looked after his Mum to the absolute best of his ability until about a year ago when he reluctantly had to put her in a care home becuse she developed dementia and became very aggresssive. He's not short of cash, neither was his Mum - the care home fees were £3000 a month. That's astronomical. The whole care system needs overhauling. If I had my way it would be regulated, carers should have to have basic qualifications and be registered similar to how nurses and doctors are with the NMC and GMC. They should also be paid a decent wage and there should be a cap on fees. At the moment there is too much emphasis on profit rather than care

I totally agree with this. Life is hard enough, but perhaps I should have raised it in the CA…sorry guys……
No apology necessary. i think there are some mercenary types about as regards inheritance. My sibling living in Australia was happy to bark his orders to my brother and I about our Dad and almost did an inspection of the house after Dad died. All he needed was a clipboard and a hard hat! me and my other brother were horrified - our Dad had just died and he was checking the roof tiles!

Care home fees are truly extortionate. There has to be a better way of doing things with state intervention.

At least there is the focal point of a quiz to stop it being just a one on one conversation. Tread very carefully either way Fred.
