Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Careful what you wish for Jazz. There are any number of reasons why you would want Johnson out of number 10, but Sassy is spot on when she asks the question who do you replace him with.

The very understandable wave of emotion surrounding Partygate is masking the fact that he is making (in my opinion) the right calls over the two main issues affecting us, and indeed the world, at the moment. The cost of living crisis and the war in Ukraine. The financial package his government has put together to help cope with rising prices is very un-Tory like in nature and I doubt if even Labour could have come up with much more. They also put together similarly good financial packages during the covid pandemic. And all that has been funded by debt and by increased taxes/NI. This is probably the most left wing Tory government of all time, certainly in my lifetime.

If Boris goes there are no outstanding candidates to take his place and that worries me. The worst thing that can happen is that he is replaced by somebody who wants to revert back to traditional Tory values, and that could very well happen. And that means austerity. I would rather have Johnson, for all his lying, his U-turns, his bungling and his narcissistic ways, than a return to austerity. That would kill the country.

Of course, he could be replaced by somebody who is left of centre, and pragmatic, and does not indeed lie more than the average MP, and who is committed to the pre-election pledges of levelling up the country, and who is known for their integrity and wishes to uphold traditional parliamentarian values. In which case bring it on. ;)
I find it hard to imagine that anyone could be worse that the lying , cheating incumbent of No 10.

Do you know Fred I'd rather a traditional Tory rather than a faux narcissicent Tory pretending to be all things to all people.

The first rule of leadership has to be honesty and trust. Without that it is impossible to lead.

He's a very complex character is BJ. He's intelligent, but does and says the stupidest things. He wants to be loved but is incredibly thick skinned. he wants to please everybody and ends up pleasing nobody. He does more U turns than the Monte Carlo Grand Prix.

That video (about 8 minutes) posted in the Conservative Party thread in Current Affairs is truly frightening.

There is more than stupidity and thick skin involved in serial lying, insulting people because they are not born with silver spoons, and his dreadful racist, homophobic and Islamaphobic writings are borderline criminal incitement to hatred.

He is much darker than the "nice but dim" persona that he tries to sell.

However, it is depressing to look at the alternatives, Tory or Labour.

I genuinely fear for you UK citizens- BJ will walk away, whenever it happens, with vast wealth and plenty of rich pals to cushion him when he does leave no. 10.

I see no one that could step in and undo the chaos over which he has presided.

I fully understand what you are saying Jazz but that's where we differ. You would rather have somebody with ethics and values making decisions that would be wrong for the country, whereas I would prefer somebody who is a liar and untrustworthy, making decisions that are right for the country. Ideally I would rather have somebody honest and trustworthy making those decisions, but they may not be the choices we are faced with at the moment sadly. I'm more than happy for Johnson to be ousted as long as they choose the right replacement. Can you rely on Tory party members to make that choice? I wouldn't bet on it tbf.

I just feel a return to austerity could very much be on the cards if the wrong person is selected.

By the way, I'm not intimating here that all, or even most of Johnson's decision making has been good. Far from it.

I don't venture into the Current Affairs thread these days BR. In fact I rarely make political posts at all. I've had my fill of the lot of them. There is too much aggravation and polarisation in the world for me, not just in politics either. I can't cope with it so I try not to get involved.

My mum used to always say to my sisters. Keep your finger on your penny. No idea what she meant. Must have been an Irish saying.

Never heard that one - mind you my sister is 6 years older, so I would have been too young to understand. All I remember is that she had to be the worst "terrible teen ever". Complete and utter rebel against everything and roared when she didn't think she was getting her own way.

I just kept out of her way, while feeling sorry for my parents!! :)

Did she ever change her rebel ways? Asking for a potentially disgruntled mom lol
