2025/26 Merlin Röhl

Laughable how the lad hasnt been playing. The manager is a tool.
Again, he's been played in games where the requirement was that we needed someone who could do a lot of running and who has enough pace to cover the ground quickly.

The games he's been selected for have been perfect for him, but he lacks a bit of ability with the ball.

We might have expected to see him from the bench a little bit more, but ultimately (and this doesn't not apply for every player who hasn't been selected this season), I actually think he's been used relatively well.

I suspect he'd have frustrated a lot of people if he'd been playing every week, given what his limitations appear to be, but at the moment he's largely been able to be effective because of the games he's been played in where there is a lower expectation about what he does with the ball.

This isn't me absolving Moyes of all blame for the season - I still despair at the lack of minutes Dibling has had, for example, but I don't think the Röhl situation is as bad as a lot of people have made out.

Dibling looked a million miles off it when on the pitch, Rohl has always looked like he has something to offer

Since starting against Aston Villa, hes played 7 minutes in 12 games; by contrast Dwight McNeil who we nearly shifted in Jan, has played 597 minutes.

So its pretty bad, but lets hope hos performance yesterday was enough to get him a second start next week.

Merlin did great. Properly dynamic, full of athleticism and drive, and rather than being overawed by his opponents, he seemed to step up and relish going at them, like any top player would.

If he develops his passing a bit but keeps that engine and endeavour, 16 million could be a very reasonable price for him. A good age too, hope he’s in a position to start next season in the middle. His position in Freiburg was closer to a CAM than a CM, I think I’d prefer if he could develop more into the latter.

Waiting with baited breath over if, and where, he plays against Palace.

I thought it was a case of two halves: first half asked by Moyes to track players and get behind the ball. Second half was able to get involved with building attacks.

The difference in quality of performance between the two halves was stark.

Third goal doesn’t happen without his pace. We really would be a lot more effective if everyone in the team was quicker.

If that’s McNeil Ndiaye KDH or Grealish getting that ball down the channel that Rohl got then we don’t score the third.

Terrible decision to shoot though. Ndiaye on the edge of the box should have been the ball, not a shot that skews so badly it becomes an assist!

Needs to be composed in those situations.

But as I said above: the quality was there after HT when he wasn't tasked just with ferreting away behind the ball. That is NOT his game.
