There is no definitive source as such as no real accurate survey can be done. There’s different methods you can use, social media followers, that sort of thing but they’re not completely accurate on their own. One method which led me to that statement is looking at the fantasy premier league game. When players sign up you choose your favourite team or none at all if that fits. Back in the day they used to show the breakdown of these numbers which consistently showed Utd and Liverpool with about 40% and 30ish% respectively.
That’s a global game with millions of players and the numbers stayed pretty much the same year on year until they stopped showing it 5 or so years ago. So I’d expect it to be the same apart from City’s numbers to be rising considerably.
Perhaps it was inaccurate to say these numbers applied to England as well as the rest of the world but even so it’s a known fact that once you leave any city most people support one of those two clubs. Even in London they have huge fan bases who aren’t from the the two home cities.
So yes it’s all a bit of guesswork but you can only go with the numbers provided and it is mind boggling just how many glory hunting tw*ts there are out there.
