Mayor's Bramley Moore Dock Open Letter To Evertonians

If you read The dan Meis details out the new Roma stadium he talks about 'intimacy' and 'home field advantage' but the reality is the distances from the pitch are larger than at the new Spurs stadium

The Roma stands are 8.9 to 11.7m away from the pitch for a 52k stadium. Spurs are 4.9 to 7.9 for 61k. Spurs would be very acceptable whilst Roma disappointing.

We do not want a replica of Roma's stadium. The distance to the pitch needs to be closer to that. I'd be very worried if he was working to those parameters to be honest.

So from this would it be fair to say that it's reasonable to have a bit of a concern that Meis' reassurances about our own stadium might not mean the actual design would be to our liking?

That people saying he is an expert, trust him, might be jumping the gun a bit?

Even if Liverpool is unsuccessful in hosting the CWG, the stadium will still be designed to place a running track for future potential events.

The closest example of a stadium built for football after hosting a track event is Manchester City's stadium... and that still has the dreaded curved terraces.

I don't see how an olympic standard running track fits into a stadium without it having curved stands... is there an example of one that ended up as a good football venue?

He's an Architect not a magician of course the design will be compromised and different to one that wouldn't have to accommodate a track. We should tell Liverpool City Council to stick it where the sun don't shine I have no faith in them to do a good job, none whatsoever. Why should they dictate to us ? it's our ground isn't it.

They're giving us the backing to make the entire thing feasible at all.

We do not have a God given right to a brand new football stadium.

I seriously hope that is not true. Athletics is not popular and we are never going to get the olympics. The conversion costs were estimated at £30m so we are not going to be hosting any diamond league events are even a future World Champioship so if the city misses out this time hard to believe they would build the stadium with athletics still being considered

I'd agree with that certainly. I appreciate his correspondence with fans, but he uses very generic broad terms, such as "atmospheric" yet there is little meat to the bone. In defence of him it's not his job to give that, it's the clubs.

As usual we get radio silence for months on these things and people wonder why paranoia and concern fill the void. Somebody from the club needs to come out and address this. If Meis is working to a Roma style plan I don't think that fits with what fans want. If it has to be a Roma style stadium, as opposed to one we would like and the reason behind it is for the running track again this needs proper discussion. None of this may be true, but how can we know when we get no communication from the club?

Trying to be as balanced as possible. On a positive note this involvement will likely raise the profile of the club. It will broadcast the stadium in a wide manner and regeneration around the stadium will be much bigger. If we have a direct presence (such as megastores) then visitors to the area will see our merchandise, and the "athletes village" nearby may be on or around club premises. Any sponsor agreements will likely increase on the back of holding the games.

The negative or potential worry is until someone shows us being able to accommodate 4 individual steep stands which are close to the pitch alongside a running track there will be scepticism. Thats not to say it can't be done, though to my memory it hasn't yet. Asking for confirmation from the club is important in this.

Secondly and I will keep saying this, we do need to ask whats in it for the club. The above is obviously all well and good, but we are renting our home out for 4 weeks. Without the stadium there will be no commonwealth games and the City will stand to make hundreds of millions from this in the longer term. It's not unreasonable for the club to be bold and demand a big fee for this which can they be repaid off the debt of the stadium. I would say we should ask for 100 million perhaps paid over 25 years, or effectively agree to wipe off the 4 million a year fee in exchange for use of the stadium.

I suspect that to get agreement for the stadium go ahead, in a difficult area and all the infastructure that will be built this is the compromise Mayor Anderson has compelled us to agree too. Of course if this is the case it will never be broadcast from either side, but I strongly suspect thats what's been agreed.

It will be fair enough if the stadium is good and what we are looking for. However the further away from a bigger Goodison we move the more questions and frustrations there will be.
You do know nobody watches the Commonwealth Games?

My concern is they've used the signing of players to take the sting out of this.

Well the design of the stadium is way more important than a clutch of come day go day players.

I really think it's time that opposition was mobilised and formalised to any attempt by the club to consider this CG BS plan and to leave them with no illusion whatsoever that only a Juventus style interior and stand design is acceptable. If we dont they will hand us an identikit no mark bowl shaped monstrosity for the next 100 years.

lol

"Right, what we'll do is spend £50m on players just before we put the letter out."

lol

Its just an awful waste of money, really hope it goes to Brum, let the councils in the midlands waste money on something very few really cares about

I think this sums up my stance, and the added info of Meis' comments on the Roma stadium and what the Roma stadium will come out like just confirms that we should be asking more questions and that it's not enough to just trust Meis' and the Mayor and wait and see
