Matthew Pennington

Holgate and Pennington on one side of the defence was a nightmare.

Both had poor games, but just a ooor tactical call for me. Can't hold it on the players. Every time Holgate got attacked, there was two on one, all the time, Baines regularly received coverage from Jags, it'll improve over time.

20/1 anytime, £10 on it. He's alright!

Truthfully imo think he was terrible today, completely out of his depth....for that second goal all around shouted dont let him come in side....get closer...you could of drove an artic lorry through the space he gave him. Tho it is just one game

He got done by a world class player. It happens to top defenders all the time nevermind a kid.

Was delighted for him when he got the goal...the feeling must have been incredible scoring at that end.

The issue was the he kept showing him inside, onto his right foot. It was a major issue, show him outside and if you get done then fair enough. It was poor defending from the lad,m

Err, where did I do that?

I hadn't even noticed that you'd spelt it wrong in the first place!

So what if you did? Why would that bother me? I clearly understood what you meant and I'm hardly the grammar/spelling police around here

Anyone who has posted on here for a long time knows the following

- You don't have to explain why you have negged/disliked someones post
- If you do get negged/have a post disliked, you don't then come in and complain about it/enquire why you got it/give the other person a neg on a completely innocuous post to even the score

Ask any long time poster on here and they will confirm this for you

Again, it wasn't retaliatory; I mentioned that because life experience has shown that almost anybody would reasonably draw that conclusion. Looks like I was right. May I reiterate that my response wasn't to get back at you for disliking my post - which btw I sincerely believe is right. The point is, Pennington isn't good enough: a typical run-of-the-mill, non-proactive, ball watching defender. Championship, perhaps, but Everton standards, nah.

And if you must 'neg' another poster, have the bottle to qualify it.

What's that saying, fool me once shame on you.... this player just did not learn.

Coutinho does it all the time, the little bit of space and then the curler. He should have shown him down the flank and let his team mates deal with any cross into the box

Hopefully the lad gets an arm round him and some advice

Also went beserk when he scored, however that doesnt change the fact that for his main role of defenfer, he wasnt at the races today, I would have loved him to play an absolute blinder, but he never

Anyone would struggle in this scenario

He hasn't played senior football in nearly a year, and was then thrown into a Derby match, at Anfield

He did well at the tail end of last season then got a serious injury

He looked rusty to me, which was to be expected after so long out

The wrong game to play him in, and to be fair he only played because Koeman had few options and was making the most of what he had

I'm not especially mad at Koeman for picking him, what annoys me is the people sticking the boot in and not appreciating the mitigating circumstances. He deserves another chance IMO, the calls to cull are ridiculous
I agree entirely about him recovering from injury and being rusty, although when we had a discussion about him and other youth team players, the point about him being slow on the turn atm was raised and was, I think, illustrated today.

But if people are going to be annoyed at anyone then the team 'stalwarts' should be the ones getting the blame, not Holgate, Pennington or DCL.

After all, anyone watching a certain Irish young fullback getting ripped to shreds in Lisbon would never have predicted the career he would subsequently go on to have.

Wasn't he once touted as the best at one on ones at the club? Surprised with him getting skinned today.
