Mass exodus of UK football journalists to American website 'The Atheletic'

It's 30 quid on offer for the year at the moment. If it isn't interesting after that, I'll bin it. A year's a good period to see if they can keep the quality up.

So far it looks like a Sports Illustrated with far more detail about football. I had a look last night around the Everton and Premier League stuff, as well as the Denver Broncos (that I keep an eye on from a past time in Colorado). A lot of articles that looked interesting, definitely enough to be going on with. Plus they have good writers (even the Broncos one is an ex-Denver Post and Sports Illustrated).

Yep, it's the "new and improved" SI

Been enjoying it so far, and oddly enough my favorite small feature is it tracks what you've read, because the headlines all look the same to me after a while and I forget what I've read and haven't

Yepp...

That James Pearce posted a link, and i got 50% 29.99 = £25 for a year, works out what? £2 a month? 50p a week? Bargain.

I signed up for the £30 a year deal to give it a go in the hope it is more reasoned, fair & objective
than all of the clickbait driven fodder churned out for the benefit of Liverpool / United biased armchair
'fans' that we get in this country. I live in hope...

I like the concept that they are going to be producing enough relevant content that you will be able to create your own feed. If they can produce a decent Everton article every couple of days (between O'Keefe and Boyland), a few non-clickbait PL articles and the odd Broncos round-up that's worth a look I'll be more than happy.

that sounds about right--3 articles per week in each feed (2 team specific and 1 general interest), which ebbs and flows depending on the time of the year. this gives writers some freedom with what they write while keeping a constant flow. i do wonder whether they'll ever move into true longform, but if not what they've got is still very good.

With deadline day approaching, I am interested to see how they tackle that.

But the stuff is good. Less of the Secret Chairman garbage and more long-form on how deals get done, please.

A hysterical over-grown schoolboy 'writes'...

"Having a reputation as a reliable source of information regarding Liverpool FC means a lot to me. I’ll be working tirelessly to protect and enhance that. Being first with the news in this profession is always the target but being right is even more important. Being able to trust what you read is crucial."

Ha Ha Ha.

The Athletic and any other specialised 'football' magazine: they are all 'owned' by the football industry. You will read nothing of any critical importance there because they are all feeding from the same trough as the clubs and individuals they report on.

The best football writing - free-thinking and original thought - is on forums like this. Unpolluted from corporatism and the need to self-censor. You get more idea about footy finances, tactics, politics from GOT than you'll get from that new creation.

Just look at the two they have reporting on Merseyside affairs: two reporters whose job it was to regularly kiss the arse of Everton and Liverpool. That's a microcosm of what you get overall.
