don't remember wigan scoring 123 goals in a seasonHis Wigan side conceded 79 goals in that Premier League season of the Spurs thrashing, ending with a 42 goal difference.
Did City expose our defensive frailties? We had to play Osman and McCarthy in front of the back four and they scored because Coleman lost his concentration (after an altercation) for the first goal and a dubious penalty (that was almost saved) sealed it.
I wouldn't say we have an especially ageing backline. If we resigned Lescott to replace Distin I think we could get at least another three years out of them before we'd have to replace anyone, by which time Jags will be 34. And Rio Ferdinand has just won the league at that age.
A good, young left back? How about Oviedo or Garbutt? An understudy to Distin? Erm, Alcaraz? Heitinga? Duffy? Stones? A dynamic central midfielder? That will be Barkley! A winger? We already have Mirallas, Pienaar and Deulofeu. A forward? Maybe a fair point but nobody is going to displace Lukaku as our lone striker. Say we did have the money and the draw to sign players like Shaw, Smalling, Honda, Zaha and Defoe who would we drop to accommodate them? They'd never come to sit on our bench and we couldn't afford the wages on such a big squad.
How much will Martinez be allowed of the Fellaini money? He's already spent it!!
"After he (Lukaku) was telephoned by the Everton manager, the Belgian rang his compatriots, Kevin Mirallas and Fellaini, to find out more about life under the Spaniard at Goodison." Wrong!
Apart from that it was a decent article.
A student of the game, “Mr Martínez” understands that players are not robots but flesh and blood. “I deal with human beings Monday to Friday and I deal with footballers on Saturday,” Martínez once told me during a long conversation about his approach to management.
“They might have a problem with the missus, with the kids. I have to look after the human being so they are as good as they can be on Saturday. On match-day, you can’t be such a nice person because they will take the Mickey out of you. I lose my temper quite easily if people drop their standards.”
