Stubborn and stupid with Alcarez or was Stones still short due to a recent illness...the Stones, btw, who lost his head against YBs and got sent off.

Not such a crazy decision really is it given people were complimentary about Alcarez's performance against Newcastle.

And hey, nothing wrong with believing in yourself

However, sometimes a manager has to admit when they are wrong and make changes

Even Alex Ferguson abandoned a new formation that wasn't working and went back to 4-4-2 at the insistance of his teams support

Martinez needs to be more flexible

If he isn't, I fear we'll be exactly where we are now next season

...but all of that flies in the face of the evidence of what happened last season. If we'd been a battling mid-table side last season there's no way I or anyone else could argue with those points you make, but the reality is the feller has proven that with players on song and the rub of the green going our way we can compete at the top end of this league.

That's the sticking point over Martinez, and I'm sure it's one that's firmly in the mind of the people who have the real say so on whether he stays or goes.

We are at a crossroads here and for the sake of keeping faith for next season we could be letting go a man who can take us places. That has to be nagging away at even the people who are losing faith in him.
Davek , I have said all along I wanted him to do well, with the age of the squad it was always going to be harder this season,
And I agree with you there seems to be one or two players undermining him, Distan for one, but at xmas the way the season was going we needed a few in to
Give us a pick up, he failed to act, since then it's gone from bad to worse and he hasn't reacted well to it at all, if he was learning from it and altering I would give him the
The benfit of the doubt but it don't look like it.
Hope I'm wrong and it all goes well , but I just don't see it on current form

The initial selection was justifiable. Him still being on the pitch after 45 minutes was not.

Stones was on the bench, so in my eyes he was fit enough to play. If he wasn't, he shouldn't have been on the bench, a reserve centre half like Browning should have been, and he would have came on.

No matter what way you look at it, the fact Alcaraz played the second half of that game is an abomination of a decision from Martinez.

In todays market McCarthy is at least £20m. Coleman last season would have cost someone £20m as he was arguably the most effective full back in the league.
Coleman had a purple patch.

It happens however technically he isn't good enough. How many right backs have been sold in the world for over 20m?

Does Coleman match up to any of them?

If our team was as expensive as we think it is individually we should be challenging for the league.

We're in 16th and being battered home and away by the likes of Stoke.

Which is fine. But if he's putting Howard back in when Robles had done well it doesn't fit.

Stones is first choice centre back, just as Howard is first choice Keeper (rightly or wrongly, that's a different arguemnt).

You can't back him/slate him for one and not the other. It's the same thing.

Stones has the sh*ts as far as i've been told. If he's fit enough for the bench he's fit enough to play.

Exactly

If Stones isn't fit to play at least 45 minutes, why was he on the bench when we had other options?

I dont think McCarthy would be out of place in a top four team. He's had injuries to contend with this season, but he's still shown flashes of form that remind you of last season when he was easily one of the stars of the PL at what he does.
Even last season or for Wigan he doesn't offer much creatively. 20m is a lot to pay for someone who just wins the ball.

Matic cost Chelsea 21m and I know who I would rather have.
