David Moyes is the answer, smith was bad i agree.
Struggling to think of a single "successful" manager of either Glasgow club to come south and do well actually. Walker was just the latest new big thing at the time.
O'Neill had success with leicester Pre Celtic and reasonable success with Villa post Celtic
There's a natural conservatism about football fans.
When smith was here the talk was 'who could do better given the board' and then we hired Moyes and (dodgy second season aside) found out that actually someone could do better.
Then when the moyes regime went sour, you heard the same 'who could do better, given the board' and then we hired Martinez and we did better in his first season here. We're having another dodgy second season but last season proved that the moyes years were not the very pinnacle of what was possible.
I don't have any time at all for Smith, tbh. Bad managers blame the circumstances, good managers win games.
Yeah, O'Neill is your best example, I think.
If it was two players being asked about a list of their favourite managers then this "news" might be significant. The fact is though that they were asked for one name. McGeady went for a manager he played under for 4 years and who paid £11M for him. Martinez isn't going to go the top of his list is he? I mean he won tons with Strachan up there in Scotland for ages and never picked him either. Same with Naismith: he played for years under Smith and won stuff up there in Scotland. One choice to make? Is he likely to say martinez? No. Not at all.I can't wait to read what @davek makes of this.
Him being the chief Robertonian round these parts and Naisy being his least liked payer and all.
Dave, Dave......oi, Dave......whatcha make of that, pal![]()
Ask the Wigan players who their favourite manager is and guess what name they'll come up with? Yes, that's right.
Steve Bruce?
Only if they like to remember losers with fondness.
