There've been a few times this season when people have said 'the team we put out was more than good enough to win the game', when it hasn't won the game, and hasn't necessarily looked particularly likely to do so. It suggests to me that people are somewhat overestimating just how good some of our players actually are.
We're a good side, going the right way, but we're really not that good. If a couple of players are off their games and we're without one or two others, we will struggle to beat teams. That will hopefully change as we see more players brought in by this regime, but the fact is bringing in players like Tosun is currently meaning the team isn't good enough to win. That's just a fact really, he's started 7 games this season against PL teams and we've won 1 of them. Whether you think that's because of his level of ability or the way he fits into the team is up to you, but it seems pretty clear that there's a big drop off when he starts games.
There's not a lot Silva can do about it, he can only work with what he's got, but I think we really need to get past this idea that we have a whole squad full of players who should be beating other PL teams first XI.
