An improvement on being the worst defence we've had in the PL era does not mean he got it to work.It plainly did work. Sam's job was to sort out the defence as we were shipping goals, to thus get points on the board which would stave off relegation fears.
He very clearly did that job, in comparison to what went on before. You even listed a bunch of clean sheets (including vs Chelsea & RS), something which seemed impossible before he came in. The odd game where we conceded a few isn't proof for your argument.
8th position and 10 clean sheets is proof against your argument.
We were still conceding more than one goal per game on average.
