The Moz chimed in with some strong words...

Celebrating my birthday in Manchester as news of the Manchester Arena bomb broke. The anger is monumental.
For what reason will this ever stop?

Theresa May says such attacks "will not break us", but her own life is lived in a bullet-proof bubble, and she evidently does not need to identify any young people today in Manchester morgues. Also, "will not break us" means that the tragedy will not break her, or her policies on immigration. The young people of Manchester are already broken - thanks all the same, Theresa. Sadiq Khan says "London is united with Manchester", but he does not condemn Islamic State - who have claimed responsibility for the bomb. The Queen receives absurd praise for her 'strong words' against the attack, yet she does not cancel today's garden party at Buckingham Palace - for which no criticism is allowed in the Britain of free press. Manchester mayor Andy Burnham says the attack is the work of an "extremist". An extreme what? An extreme rabbit?
In modern Britain everyone seems petrified to officially say what we all say in private. Politicians tell us they are unafraid, but they are never the victims. How easy to be unafraid when one is protected from the line of fire. The people have no such protections.

He's a total cretin.

That is what she said will happen - but aside from Parliament (at least whilst its closed), some Embassies and the Palaces, there isn't really that much more of a police response that they can replace in order that it can be freed up to do other things. Almost all of that is in central London as well, where there is a much higher number of armed officers already (certainly than compared to the rest of the country).

I could understand it if she was authorizing the army to help out county forces, especially given where this attack occurred and the relative strength of the police in those areas, or if she was announcing troops on the streets patrolling with police (which is what most of the French Vigipirate patrols are IIRC), but to replace the Police isn't something that makes the clearest sense at present.

Personally, I think it's an extremely sensible proposal. It frees up armed police to have more of a presence at events and avoids the scenes of armed forces patrolling with the police (which should be an absolute last resort).

It's worth pointing out that there are only around 5,000 members of the armed forces who will be drafted in, we're not talking about tens of thousands.

I would hope a lot of it could be spread about for all those that helped as it seems he wasn't the only one.

A selfless act, those who have nothing gave everything.

Is right

That's a decent donation to a meals on wheels for a time period, accommodation etc.

5,000 is roughly the same number of armed police officers we have nationwide though (wikipedia states it was 5600 in 2014, and there has been some recruitment since so its probably more than that now).

My point is that there aren't that many sites that they could conceivably replace police at, so in all likelihood this will mean troops on the streets.

Having read his account of events earlier I hope this fella gets some help and support.

Edit: Just seen how much has been donated, that's superb.

Takes a very very brave man to run towards rather than away from something like that, small snapshot on how judging anyone on face appearance is sad.

Just a few weeks ago some teenage lads filmed themselves beating the crap out of a homeless bloke in Manchester as well.... makes you ponder what society has become.

I think one of the main aims of the operation they've put in place, aside from protecting people, is to try and limit, where possible, a number of armed forces on the streets, as it's not very 'British'.

How this actually works... well, I think we'll just have to wait and see.

The last time we were 'critical' was 2007, this plan was only drawn up after the Paris attacks.

But from what I remember, armed forces replace armed police guards at key 'targets', freeing up armed police to guard less high-profile 'targets' (sporting events, concerts etc).
Sounds pretty sensible if true. Shame it's come to this though.

Haven't read through all the posts so sorry if this has been posted
Firstly my sympathies to all the families affected by this horrendous act of cowardice.
Secondly I just seen that YaYa Toure and his agent have promised 100,00 pounds to the families.
Would it be a good idea if every member of the first team squads of both Manchester teams offered to donate a weeks wages to the families.
Even better if the Govermnent offered to waive income tax on that weeks wages.
How would one even propose such an idea
